I guess what I'm also saying is that if he's worth a 1st this year, it's because he's a useful hockey player. I'm happy for him.

If he wasn't worth anything right now it's because his career would likely be over, and that would make me sad panda.

I don't think the price for Lindholm was high. I think it was what it was always going to be. I think this price for Monahan is sky high. I'd be mortified if we gave our our 1st and 3rd for Monahan. I'd rather go and pay a second for Adam Henrique.

From the time that Tre took over, the Flames rebuild process pretty much stopped. It was like Sutter fitting in pieces that may fit and hope to make the playoffs every year just to get bounced in the first round, that's it. This is something that I hope Conroy has learned, never lowball your superstar franchise players and don't go out looking for a superstar goalie to mask the deficiencies of the team.
Hindsight.

When he added Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri, many in the hockey world thought the Flames would be contenders.

Wow this is an emotional trade for a Flames fan.

How can I get even madder about the trade to Montreal.

Happy for Sean that he found some life in his career still.

The Jets might be the first other Canadian team since Ottawa '07 I feel compelled to cheer for in the playoffs. Because I feel like their fans would only be moderately annoying on the heels of a win, and there are few guys I would like to see win more in the game today.

I wouldn't want to pay a haul for either but if you just named them player A and player B I think its fair to say Monahan has been better this year. Like have you been watching the Flames? Lindholm has been one of the least noticeable players on the team. Every time I watch the Habs Monahan is in the middle of things.

Even in the fancy stats Lindholm has been one of the Flames worst players. His value was 100% reputation of 2 way play because we hadn't seen it this year.
Simple question: if both Monahan and Lindholm are available at the same price, which one do you take?

No one cares who scored more goals over a few month period - which player is more valuable, and which one would you pay a higher price for, if you were buying?

I don't cheer for other teams, I'm a flames fan. Doesn't matter what Canadian team he goes to, I won't cheer for them. Good luck monneyhands

for Christ sake, all I said is Monahan has had a better season
odd it was basically a fact on CP a week ago

Lets see how the playoffs go, I get that Lindholm has a better reputation but we can also compare playoff stats because Monahan wins there too.

So either your colours are showing, or you just don't like Monahan. I like both of them and I think the price for both was pretty high.

So essentially we have:

Monahan: 1st+ 3rd
Lindholm: 1st + 3/4th + Kuzmenko + Brzustewicz + Jurmo

I see the 2 prospects as kind of a 1st and a 3rd, so basically Lindholm got about twice what Monahan returned. Does that seem fair?

I am more surprised about Monahan's return than Lindholm's but looking at the two side by side, I don't see evidence that the Jets panicked, in relation to the Canucks.

It wasn't fact, it was some peoples' opinions, and you know that.

Again, simple question: who would you pay more for?

You just pick the oddest hills to die on.

Lindholm is a minute munching center that plays in all situations and has been nominated for a Selke trophy.

Monahan is a guy that was always a shooter, not great defensively, awesome on the powerplay with a huge number of debilitating injuries.

This isn't even close.

for the 100th time I said he has had a better season THIS YEAR SO FAR

I know Lindholm has been all these wonderful things in the past...this year he has straight up sucked. Like am I the only one with eyes here? Lindholm hasn't been some amazing two way player this season at all. Look at the fancy stats. Lindholm has played in all situations...poorly lol

Vancouver is betting he gets back to his old self with a change of scenery, lets see.

I'm sure if Monahan outscores Lindholm and the Jets go further I will still be wrong though just like Zadorov who has hurt the Flames so bad their record improved since he left and the Canucks wanted to dump him already lol.

This is a deal for a few months, I wouldn't be shocked if Monahan helps the Jets more than Lindholm helps the Canucks. It could go either way.

Yes, correct. I think Monahan is a one dimensional winger pretending to be a center and has done so for his entire career. I still chortle that people here actively tried to argue he was better than Bo Horvat.

That seems like a very big over simplification of the deal. Brzu was a 3rd round pick and dealt from a organizational position of strength and Jurmo was a player the Canucks were likely not signing in the off-season. If the Flames had asked for two 1sts and two thirds the Canucks balk.

Jets took a player who can turn into a pile of dust or back into a pumpkin at any moment and gave up a 1st round pick for the pleasure. It's wild. There were more reliable options that could provide the same amount for a lot less.

They 100% royally screwed up, not taking that prime opportunity to rebuild. You're two superstars decide to leave and the following draft is supposed to be one of the best in decades. If there was ever a time...

I think both trades were perfectly rational for the buyers.

The Canucks wanted to add another top-6 forward who can play a strong two-way game, preferably a centre who can also play wing if they need to shuffle lines. They've got a good prospect pool after years of being bad, and want the best possible shot at a deep playoff run with the team they've built. Lindholm checks all their boxes, and the price they paid doesn't gut their future. Brzustewicz is a good prospect, but offensive D is not a position of organizational need; Jurmo is a long shot; the draft picks are in the normal range for quality rentals.

The Jets wanted a scoring centre to fill the hole while Scheifele is injured, and (assuming Scheifele returns when expected) for depth in the playoffs. They wanted to get that guy on a cheap contract so they would not have to dump a roster player for cap reasons. Monahan checks those boxes.

Calgary and Montreal, on the other hand, are out of the picture this season and neither Lindholm nor Monahan was expected to re-sign. Logically, they had to sell to the highest bidders, and those were both pretty damn good bids.
