It reminds me of the politicians filling jerry cans before the carbon tax increases.

Right? Performative nonsense and somehow Terry thinks he can score points by trashing the very same bylaw he voted for??
Is the bag fee perfect? Hell no. But let's not all light our hair on fire over $0.15.

I didn't vote for him, but since the election I have found Terry to be pretty pragmatic and open to differing opinions and will change his mind/vote based on information. Drives me crazy when he does stupid stuff like this.

Do people not already have reusable bags in their car already?
I suspect there's a Venn overlap between people who think washing your hands 10+ times a day is crazy and those who can't put their food in their own bag.

I'm curious to know your thoughts on how this would be possible. Between your example and Cliff's sidewalk example, who do you think typically fills those roles? How much do you think they should be paid for their work? How do you avoid their increased wages and benefits from becoming line item cuts in budget deliberations when councilors are trying to eke out a couple million in savings for a nice headline? These are the roles that typically experience higher turnover due to the workers looking for better work conditions and upward mobility. These jobs tend to be easier to fill as needed since the training requirements aren't onerous.

It's not the $0.15 though. Like I don't think that anyone really cares about that. It's the other dumb things that come with this. If I buy a bowl of soup, I pretty obviously want a spoon.

See, it's not though. I get Vietnamese soup often. It comes with a crappy plastic spoon and mediocre chop sticks. I never ever use them, because I eat at home. Yet I rarely remember to tell them not to include them. It's pure waste. Stopping that is a good thing.

Also the people lighting their hair on fire: “how does this 15 cent thing even work??!”
Okay, maybe it doesn’t actually affect you then, so why are you freaking out about it?

Hav. Yes. The people complaining about always forgetting their reusable bags in the car when they go shopping = people who complain about not getting a bag for their order in the drive-thru.

I'm surprised at the folks saying "I didn't vote for him but he's been good to deal with."
My experience has been that he's great at talking about how we all need to listen and get along, but he's a limp towel when it comes to standing for anything or getting anything done.
Case in point: the 5th ave NW re-paving. The city policy is that the cycling lane should be rebuilt as a protected lane, but oh no there was no budget for it and despite many of his constituents asking for it, he's not going to find it. The bike lane is literally right next to a school and the road is already being ripped up -- the perfect opportunity for some pragmatic fiscal conservatism.
But because it's not easy, Terry's just going to throw his hands up and we'll rip it up and repeat the next time the road needs to be repaved. IMO Terry's a shell of a councillor with no views of his own, hiding behind pragmatism and compromise. He just goes wherever is easiest. He got in on a vote split and I desperately hope a better option is available next cycle so we're not stuck with him for a decade like Sean Chu.
ALSO: he voted for the bylaw? What the hell

I disagree completely. Terry has done absolutely nothing except relay what the city managers tell him. He shows up at our community association meetings quite often and puts his stupidity on full display. He can't answer a simple question unless it's been prepared for him by one of his short-lived staffers. I can't think of a single thing he's done to improve the city in any way. I know a lot of people disliked Druh Farrell but she made sure that our communities got investment when it was available. Terry does nothing at all.

I’m not trying to justify it. I’m a former journalist. I understand how the industry works. Columnists are journalists, and their job is to express strong opinions that drive engagement. Bell does that. Your dislike of the opinions he expresses in his column doesn’t make it ‘not journalism.’ It makes it journalism you dislike.

The bylaw passed with a 10-4 vote last year. Sharp was absent and Chabot, McLean, Wyness, and Chu were the councillors who voted against the bylaw last year. All others, including Wong, voted in favour.

'Why not just pay the $0.15', 'people have a choice, it's a very minor cost', 'do people not have reusable bags in their cars'; god damn, do some of you ever go out of your way to justify unnecessary performative nonsense just because someone you don't like has signaled they're against it.
Terry Wong is an idiot; he voted for this bylaw and he should shove his cold fries up his ass because he's now complaining about something he gave the thumbs up to.
But we can also agree (and we did just pages ago when this bylaw was still pending) that this is a stupid bylaw. And 'do paper bags even keep your fries warm'... of course it will so long as it's closed, or do you not understand how air works and why your parents yelled at you to close the front door when it was -20°C out?

Imagine if the price of your take-out food order went up by $0.15 and nobody told you why. Would you have cared?

I honestly could not care less I'm just here to pile on Terry Wong.
This will probably cost less than what, $10 each year? Major meh. Not worth getting worked up over.

I am no expert, but I think the insulating properties of a door and a paper bag are a little different. And at some point, if you plan to eat those fries you're probably going to have to open the bag.

I'm not saying they have the same or similar insulating properties, I'm literally talking about air exchanging between cold and warm spaces and without a barrier the temperature will normalize between them faster. Yes, if your bag was made out a DOOR then I'm sure it would be superior. I would pay 15 cents for an insulated bag, but then we actually are sh-tting on the environment.

Imagine suddenly you started losing things that were included with your order unless you paid more money for it. Oh wait, we don't have to, it's actually happening. See, it's dumb sh-t like this. How is this a justification?
No, I won't notice, but I have zero dependents and lots of disposable income. The same way people are complaining about inflation, no, I don't really notice that either. I dunno, maybe I just give a crap about other people who aren't me and don't make as much as me, instead of just pretending I do when it lets me score fake internet points. I think offloading these costs to consumers to pretend we're doing something positive for the environment (spoiler: we're not) accomplishes nothing but increases the burden on people who are already feeling a crunch.
'It's just 15 cents', no, because a lot of costs to consumers are increasing, to some it'll be death by a thousand cuts, and we're getting zero actual positive return.
And who the f--k wants to use a re-usable bag for take-out? Seriously, are you going to use one bag just for drive-through orders? With the glorious grease stains you're bound to get eventually? No thanks.
