The second you sign a guy to a NTC or NMC it shows he wants a level of stability for himself or his family. I have no problem with that. But if you believe the premise that that shows a lack of commitment to winning (which I disagree on, as you can have both a desire to win and stability), it's on the team and executive who signed him. No matter what their salary is, and certainly there's a level of professionalism someone making millions has to perform, if the team signed someone to a NTC/NMC, it's purely on the team if they're stuck with him. That's not a Markstrom statement, that's anyone. You have to do your due diligence as to where the persons commitments lie, and if they want some level of stability then you're accepting some risk. That's why signing anyone long term after about 27 is a risk because after partying and doing stuff that young athletes do, some want to settle down. Add to that bodies breaking down and whatnot and you're accepting some risk.

I disagree with Brian Burke's blowhard approach though. He used to say if you signed a player to a NTC/NMC he wouldn't approach them about asking them to waive. Well, what about if it may be a better opportunity or a life situation that may benefit them and the team?

Anyway, back to Markstrom, I don't agree with the assertion he lacks commitment to winning. We all have jobs, and some of us will run through a wall for a company, while others know our limitations (I'm in the latter half). Some people talk a big game (the linkedin folks) while others just go about doing their business. I suspect Markstrom is committed to his family and leaves the BSing for others to do about their commitment to hockey. It's just a sport, why should he care so much at the expense of his personal life? Why should any of us?

Tkachuk leaving had absolutely nothing to do with him thinking he would never win anything here.

Markstrom’s brother is the better goalie of the two.

Markstrom is our biggest poker chip if the Flames are willing to go there.

The rumour is that Jacob Markstrom has one or more eyes.

If they can capitalize on a big haul then I think you definitely go all in. Wolf is the future and this team won’t be competing for a cup anytime soon. Makes sense on so many different levels. But like you said, are the Flames willing to go there? Hopefully this new management group decides to go a different route as a change in philosophy is definitely needed.

The mental gymnastics some people go through on here, just to have a contrarian opinion or cast people in a negative light is absolutely astounding.

Personally I like having a variety of views, extreme or otherwise. Makes for more interesting discussions to hear where they’re coming from. You don’t have to agree with everything.

If there was a time to strike while the iron is hot it's now for Markstrom. Dudes been a beast since coming back from injury. And I'm certain teams in need have noticed.

One thing I've been critical on about the Flames the last couple of weeks has been their d zone coverage and how Markstrom has covered that up with his play. Evidenced by the Chicago game and the game before and after the Chicago game.

So maybe the Flames acknowledge that as well. They've outscored their issues so far, but is it that sustainable leaning on Marky?

Markstrom is a good goalie and seems like a leader in the room.

Conroy trading Markstrom would take some huge ones and I would respect the hell out of it.

It would make the direction of this team much clearer.

We have a surplus of goalies. We need forwards who can put the puck in the net

I think we need Defense more honestly. Got a lot of holes to fill moving forward.

Let’s face it, most players are unlikely to ever win a Stanley Cup.

Marky has likely figured that out. He wants to play in a City where he can comfortably raise his family.

That’s his Stanley Cup.

I generally agree with you but having a goalie like Wolf available it is a much easier decision.

Trade Tanev retained for a solid d prospect on the verge. Ask Tanev to come back on a 3 year deal in free agency. Good mentor. Young guys need a greybush to shownthen the ropes anyways.

If the rumour about Hanifin is true I’m not sure I agree

Weegar
Anderson
Hanifin
Kylington if he keeps progressing
Gilbert
Desimone
Kuznetsov

Guessing they are trading Tanev. But I think the above group is still competent once Kylington gets the rust off.

We don’t have a scorer in the top 50.

If Hanifin is gone than I do agree with you. If we move out Lindholm, Tanev and one of Markstrom/Vladar we’d have a lot of flexibility.

The Flames are going to be short on high end talent at every position, including the blueline. After we bring up players from the farm I think the biggest gaps are still up still front. We need a top center and another wing to fill out the top six on top of what we have IMO. Our numbers on the blueline don't look great but with having Kylington coming back, and Solovyov, Kuznetsov, and Porier all knocking at the door, we are probably in better shape there than the forward ranks. We definitely need more draft picks on the blueline, Morin being the only one likely to filter into the minors soon kind of hurts. Top end blueline prospects are hard to come by so getting them in trade can be tougher than grabbing quality forwards. If someone offers one, the team shouldn't turn their nose up at him, but I think they need to take some swings are bringing in guys with talent at putting the puck in the net.

Looking at possible trade destinations for players and who had defensive prospects to give, Detroit seems the best target. Edvinsson, Pellikka, and Wallinder would all be great targets. Buium and Gibson might be guys you could shake loose as an add-in to a deal. Detroit has had a ton of picks and they have the prospect pool to match, so they could be worthy of being raided for help.

I think we can agree that any picks the Flames have may be used on picking defensemen in the future as we are paper thin there as a system. Then again, we're paper thin at every position in the system after a couple of less than stellar drafts in 2021 and 2022.
