NJ makes too much sense for Markstrom:
- Terrible goaltending that is causing them to be out of the playoffs
- Close enough to playoffs to not be out of the race this year
- Entering their contention window, exactly what Markstorm wants and NJ would benefit from 3 years on the contract
- Have this years 1st, overloaded on good forwards and prospects

What we need is an Edmonton-Toronto-NJ bidding war that NJ wins.

Flames could IMO easily get a first from NJD if they took Vanacek back in the deal.

He has one more year left at $3.5m cap hit.

Since the Devils are on the bubble I imagine they would lottery protect the first for 2024.

You could still ease Wolf along and continue giving the net to all three goalies, and maybe Vanacek rebounds with a change of scenery and you can get another asset for him (or Vladar) in the off season.

If Markstrom is traded, great, but we better be getting some good pieces in return.
Who cares, he breaks some things, some are wrong but a lot are right. Its like reading restaurant reviews and everyone talks about the service. I want to know the important stuff like the food or the trade, not how nice they are.

Whether we are rebuilding or not - they should trade Markstrom. He's older, value is high and he's inconsistent. If you hold on him and has another pumpkin season - you get next to nothing for him.

I also doubt it matters much to how the team does the rest of the year. Vladar and Wolf would be fine. Doubtful they are as good as Markstrom - but its probably a 2 point wing in the final results of the season.

It's going to be Markstrom announced to the NHL All-Star game probably.

Not a cheap contract, so his performance makes it the easiest moment in time to move it

LA and Carolina are desperate and want to win now. And have assets. And you could see Marky waiving for either.

If they trade him now, it's selling paypal at $300 in July 2021.
Talbot is playing very well for LA. They’re looking for a reliable backup, not a starter. And CAR have been reluctant to spend assets on goalies.

NJ and COL seem like the prime destinations for a goalie.

This is going to be my random guess.

Markstrom

for

Vanecek
2024 1st (Top 10 protected)
2026 2nd (Conditional pick, 2nd round if Devils make conference finals in 2024, 2025, or 2026, 3rd round pick if they don't)
McLeod (just to make dammage happy)

I think NJ presents probably the best fit for trade here. Have a couple decent prospects that be attractive to Flames I believe. Casey, Hameenaho

Maybe I'm out to lunch here, but I think people are massively underestimating what Markstrom could bring back in a trade. It's a unique situation IMO, lots of contenders needing goaltending - how often is that the case? A middling team looking to sell that has a goalie with a pretty consistent history (minus last season) who is performing very well this season... just seems to me we should be expecting a 1st + for Marky, or a very good prospect/young player.

With retention, and I think we're talking about it being with retention because the teams that could use him could also use that cap space, yeah...the return is probably significant. 1st +, and I imagine that's why the only reason Conroy would really consider it. It has to be worth it.

Yeah I was going to make a quick edit mentioning full retention. If you are a team that thinks you are a competent goaltender away from a deep playoff run and potentially the Cup, you'll pay for it. LA, Carolina, TO, and Colorado fit into that description I believe.

Just take the Leaves out of it. Nothing ever good comes from trading with them.

I would be okay with a Markstrom to NJ trade. NJ has an excess of high end young players, and they appear ready to dispose of them in exchange for pieces that will allow them to compete now with their core built around J. Hughes. Would really love to see a trade for Holtz or Mercer. The dream would be Nemec. I wonder if the Flames could add Lindholm or a re-signed Hanifin to make that happen.

Losing Markstrom also likely lands the Flames a top 5 pick this year.

Going into a rebuild with Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, this year's top 5, Nemec, Wolf, etc..could turn the team around really quickly. Could be a true retool.
