He flip flopped on Gaudreau as well. People just remember him being vocal about Gaudreau leaving long before anyone else, that's why he gets the benefit of the doubt. Personally, I don't trust Francis as a source.

In contrast, Loubardias always had a great hand on the pulse of the organization. You could often tell which prospects the Flames were high on. He was really praising Coronato before his draft. He also was pretty adamant about Valimaki being surpassed by MacKey in the AHL in Sutter's first full year, and so on.

If they are signing Hanifin, they are hoping he is still growing

Because right now he is very bland, not great, not bad. He is just there filling space

Over 500 games in the NHL already. He is what he is.

TBH I think flashy dmen that either run around and hit or put up a ton of points can be overrated and steady dmen that can play big minutes and drive play without putting up huge point numbers can be underrated, especially in this market.

People focus on the mistakes and ignore the general steady play 95% of the time.

Call it the Jay Bouwmeester (or to a lesser extent TJ Brodie) effect.

Kadri

Weegar
Hanifin
Backlund
Coleman
Markstrom
Andersson (probably re-signed)

That's our core for the next 5 years.
The chances of all those players still playing with the Flames in 5 years is zero.

No sense getting worked up about it, this team will look a lot different in the next year or two. Lots of youth coming. Going to be fun.

He’s not better but at least he accepts reasonable contract lengths.

“Accepts” because he wouldn’t play otherwise.

8 x league min would be awesome though.

Sportsnet says Zegras is available. Zary and Zegras with Kadri in the middle could be exciting.

Can’t imagine what they could offer them that would make sense.

It would need to be some young talent or draft picks.

"Hanifin is mediocre, not worth keeping. That's why a contending team should send us a haul of assets for him, moreso if we extend him first."

Yeah he is certainly a quality dman. Question is does the Flames need such a dman while rebuilding.

And yeah I know they are not rebuilding

Not by choice that is

Hockey teams always need exactly that kind of defenseman.

Maybe not at $7.5 million though.

The Ducks would have to be stupid to trade Zegras imo. He has oodles of skill and creativity. He is also a marketing cash cow. Unless he wants out you hold onto that guy.

Isn't his contract set up like how Tkachuk's was as well? Probably a future headache for some team.

Ya, if it was us trying to acquire him I would worry about the US player factor there.
