Not sure if Coleman would waive to go there and I am not sure what the definition of young guy is but Coleman for Pinto would be fantastic. As of right now Ottawa still would not be able to sign him. A trade like that only works if they move out Tarasenko for picks but a forward like Coleman is some of what Ottawa needs IMO.

Like, how much more leeway do they need? The guys halfway out the door. You either spend assets to pick their game up or move them and go with the youth.
I think it's pretty evident over the span of the last four years that there's nothing left here but a dead horse.

Don’t think the NMC is in effect until next year. If some comes knocking with a 1st rounder do you say no?

Capfriendly has Coleman with a full NTC this year and a 10 team trade list starting next season for the rest of the contract.

Coleman has been the best player on the team and a great role model for younger guys. Why get rid of him?

No disrespect to Coleman as he’s been great this year, but when a player of his caliber has a full NTC (that turns into a limited one) you know this league is broken. Those types of contracts should be reserved for star players only.

Sell high before a regression. Gain some assets for the future. Help the team drop a few spots in the standing.
If a good return is out there for him I think you take it. I'm doubtful the offers would be woethwhile without retention though.

My hope for Flames draft is Konsta Helenius at our pick and grab Jiricek on the slide with an acquired pick. Watched Helenius at WJC he is going to be good.

Rather have another consensus top-32 18 year old.
They got Weegar and Backlund and Kadri and Huberdeau to set an example.

I could see the league pushing for something like that in the next CBA negotiations… something like each team only being allowed to have 3 NMC’s or putting greater limitations on them such as a maximum list of 5 teams on a no-trade list. The league would like it as it makes it easier to make trades. Players would obviously push back.

I agree with every word of this. And yet I look at that top 4 on D and wonder why the team isn’t better.
A lineup with that top 4, filled out with Calgary Wranglers, should have easily been enough to control that game today.

I'm ready for a minor burn down, followed by fantastic surprises.

Think you just explained why they should be resigning Hanifin

Players only get NTC’s or NMC’s because the GM’s want to give them out. The league has enough guard rails to protect dumb GM’s.

He will make 5.6% of the salary cap next year with his percentage dropping going forward. His salary really is not that much. I guess the question is whether a 40 point, defensive specialist who is great on the PK is worth something without retention. I suspect the answer is yes, he is basically making close to the league average and he is an above average player.

Because they don’t need that for another 3-4 yrs when they have prospects ready to compete

Most contenders do not have 4.9M cap space for average player. That’s why he signed here and still not in Tampa

Finding someone to take Coleman without paying to have to do it would be amazing. He's signed till he's 35yrs old for way too much. He plays a position that we should be using cheap young guys.
The model should be:
70% +/- 5% of salary cap on top 6 + top 3 D and Goaltender
25% +/- 5% on remaining players, with 5% ready to deploy at the deadline.
I'm aware Coleman plays higher in the lineup with us (which is why we're on the bubble). In my mind he's paid 2x what he should be for his position as a 3rd liner. He should be 3% of the cap when fully realised.
