Why does Marner approve this trade?
Marner is a UFA in 1.5 seasons. So assuming you simply ignore his NMC, do you sign Marner for 8 years when Calgary is likely not close to contending?

Best ASSESTS available age 24 or younger. If that's picks its picks, if its players its players. They wont strip it down Chicago style that would of had to happen immediately with Tkachuck. That boat is gone.
Flames have a dominate AHL product, the NHL product is mid tier however injecting players on similar age group of Zary, Pelt, Pops, Wolf could easily increase the team tier.
We could be waiting awhile to get a superstar but eventually you land a stud outside the top 30.

Feels like at best we’d get a low first rounder and some sort of B prospect for Hanafin. I’d rather sign him.

Not the way I would do it, but not surprised.
Playing long odds and grabbing top tier talent outside of the lottery seems foolish to me, especially with our depleted farm system.
But hopefully these trades can restock and we hit the lottery on a guy that other teams missed. Seems to be the strategy.

At the end of it all I just want to see Cayden Lindstrom a Flame come draft day. It's not a big ask is it?

If you have a decent backend you can shorten that time frame.

They need to target a guy like Byram in a Lindholm trade if they're trading Hanifin. I agree you can't just trade solid defensemen in service of the concept of "rebuild," there has to be a plan to become a contender again, not just lose player -> gain pick -> profit at some point in the future(?) which can be just as catastrophic as trying to continue competing with a mediocre team.
Feaster's trade of Bouwmeester for example didn't make much sense to me. Didn't really accomplish anything, return turned into nothing, we got lucky that Gio became a Norris quality defender and Brodie emerged, and still it took about 3 years to recover to a competent NHL defense again.

27 goals and 46 points in 32 games, to go with 66 PIM.

You need three defense that can objectionably step into a top pairing roll, to not be a tire fire in this league. Keeping Andersson and Weegar, we only really need to have to see one guy step into that role (Kylington, maybe) or pick up a minute munching D-man in UFA to make a lineup work, next year.
I'm ready for a minor burn down, followed by fantastic surprises.

I went to tankathon and hit simulate and on the first try, Flames got #1. If they could pull of getting a high pick with their own and then get 2 more first and draft Iggy and a kid like Mews or Jiricek(if he drops because of his injury), they would be in great shape moving forward.

I suspect the rumours about possibly extending Hanifin are just to put some urgency into other teams to make offers, but if you had to pick one of the UFAs to re-sign, Hanifin wouldn't be the worst given his age. It would be better than losing him for nothing or a return that is inconsequential.

When they get home tonight I hope they wrap the ufas in bubble wrap and tell them to stay home. About the only thing that can happen to this team between now and trade deadline is injuries

Rentals usually don’t return guys like Byram. More likely to end up with zero players than an impact guy when they get a 1st and prospect

I wonder if Ottawa would be after Coleman.
Staios mentioned that he isn't ready to give up on the young players, but that he's looking for hard working guys to show the young players the level of commitment required. That just scream Coleman to me. Coleman has a NTC and he's playing really well, but he seems like a great sell high candidate.

I could definitely see that being the type of player would be looking for. I doubt the flames would be eager to trade him as he is a great guy to have around for the young guys here but if they got a great offer for him, they might be tempted to move him when his value is the highest it’s ever been. Ottawa’s first round pick this year would definitely not be in the cards but a lottery-protected first round pick next year might be. It would be smart asset management on Conroy’s part IMO.

Don't the Flames want a guy on the roster who could show our young kids the level of commitment they need?

At the opportunity cost of saying no to a 1st round pick?
No.

I'm sure they had a handle on the math all along, but man that loss feels like a crystallization point.

For Coleman? Not a chance. Not with the term he has left and where Ottawa is in the standings.
I only see Coleman willing to waive to Dallas anyway.

This franchise is frustratingly stubborn when it comes to pulling off things like a re-whatever you want to call it (re-Tool/Build/Stock). Much like how low I set the bar for this seasons expectations, I've also set the bar low for these guys to do anything proactive or at an appropriate time.
It's just easier that way rather than wasting emotional energy on something so completely out of our control.
Only fun I'm having is figuring out what each rumored teams assets I'd like the Flames to acquire for the players who are trade bait.
