I'll assume it's posturing to up his value, for my own sanity.

I say that if you can’t get a deal done by the deadline then you need to cut your losses and trade him

NJD announced Siegenthaler out a while. This could change things.

Lacking of planning and vision is going to #### this up. The Flames haven't had a plan since 1985 and the results are obvious. Fletcher was the last GM with a plan and the sack to stay the course.

I think Hanifin talking extension is to up the price, and telling others not to **** around unless they’re serious.
If he signs though, he’s the only guy I’m fine with extending. Lindholm must be traded no matter the scenario. I prefer both dealt though.
That Siegenthaler broken foot might actually jumpstart the Devils getting very, very serious about getting Hanifin. They’re missing a whole pairing now with Sieg and Dougie.

If the Flames are talking to Noah I'd wager there's about a 110% chance we resign him now... bummer because I feel like the price he'd get is only increasing by the minute.
It's really too bad, but par for the course for Calgary.
Never commit to actually re-tooling/building properly.

they're never rebuilding, and he's not a terrible piece to be part of a 're-tool or re-load or whatever)

I do despise futility in “re” terminology. “Re-load”/“re-tool” mean nothing. In a league where teams usually shuffle 1/4(ish) of their roster annually, “re-load”/“re-tool” means absolutely nothing. The Flames should commit to building through the top of the draft. If the Flames in fact believe they can build a Stanley Cup winning team without drafting at the top/near the top of the draft, I pity the organization and all of us fans.
If that is what they believe, maybe we are actually looking at one of those situations where this team will never be a Stanley Cup contender under the current ownership. I imagine we’ll get a pretty clear, and final indication of this over the next two months.

I actually didn't like Hanifin when he was paired with anyone other than Tanev this season. His pairing was just giving up way too much defensively when he wasn't paired with Tanev.
Hanifin - Tanev: 22GF, 20GA, 415 mins 55.2xG%, 50CF%, 2.75xGF/60, 2.23xGA/60 Hanifin - Andersson: 13GF, 12GA, 193 mins 40.9xG%, 45.7CF%, 1.89xGF/60, 2.73xGA/60 Hanifin - Weegar: 3GF, 3GA, 75 mins 47.8xG%, 54.2CF%, 2.72xGF/60, 2.97xGA/60 That said, the Hanifin - Tanev pairing is one of the top pairings in the league, but I don't see Hanifin being a stabilizing presence and helping a younger D in the future like Tanev is.
I always wonder if Hanifin has another gear somewhere, so he can become like Toews defensively... and so far I don't see it, and that's why I prefer to see him traded. Especially since I don't see the Flames contending in the next 4 years, and maybe even the next 8.

It's almost like the hockey gods are helping us out for a change, what with all the defensemen and goalies going down/not performing....

I love what you bring to the table but I think Noah has to stay, especially if he wants to!

Here's the thing. If one was to believe the last batch of rumors from the beginning of the season, the Flames and Hanifin had a deal in place.
So if they're cozying up again, the extension should be imminent.
I know nobody is in a rush to do anything but I feel like if things were rosy again, the deal would be done already.

If Noah ends up getting traded, I think we can chalk this up to Conroy “playing” the media to try and drive up trade value.

That's a tough one, on the one hand he's irreplaceable, coming into his prime, easy to cheer for and a very solid player. Not the type of guy you want to see traded. On the other hand I think we all realize the flames have no chance of winning a cup with this group and are sleepwalking towards another mediocre draft choice with a prospect cupboard that doesn't really have anyone who seems to have potential to become a superstar. Moving Hanifin probably improves your next three years of draft position as well and means we are cheering for a better team in two or three years, which I know is a hard sell for season ticket holders in the short term but is the logical move when you know your group isn't going to be that good.
The team has a long below average stretch ahead if this existing group stays together with some tweaks and a couple minor additions like a late first or two or a faded top prospect another team is willing to give up on... feels like it has potential to become very young guns era just getting stuck in that pathetic no mans land between playoffs and actually rebuilding.
As far as a blueprint, in order to win in today's nhl with how skilled the game has become and the lack of physicality, the flames desperately need to find a way to add a young star player or two who can really score and I have a hard time seeing another team giving up anyone they see becoming elite for Lindholm the way he is playing, or Tanev.
Especially with the 1st we're about to lose in the Monahan deal - I think they should really focus on accumulating draft picks and try to get those guys in the draft, rather than making more moves like the Toffoli deal and just kicking the can down the road. Preference on my end is that they would move all three of Hanifin, Tanev and Lindholm rather than re-sign Hanifin.
