If they keep him, that's fine. He should not be paid more than Weegar though. I definitely prefer to see him moved though.

We know the deal, more or less. It's 8 years and $7.5M AAV.
I want to see him traded. Keeping this core group together just means they won't win anything, nor will they ever be bad enough to draft an impactful, top end player.

Why not?
Hanifin is the one UFA I'd be fine with keeping

I don't want to keep any of them. It's not a core worth locking into further than they already have.

He's a good player but what is this team trying to do?
If we re-sign him and subtract lindholm and tanev, is this not a 12th- 16th place team for the foreseeable future? It makes us too good to bottom out and get top picks but we're not going to be better then we have the last two seasons.

I'd be fine moving or keeping him; depending on the return.
He's a good player and still young.
Not much downside in keeping him, we can't trade everyone.
Move Tanev, Lindholm, maybe one or two of Coleman/Kadri/Markstrom to contenders and keeping Hanifin is fine.

I would question Hanifan wanting to re-up now. Good player, probably a great guy, but if I only had one real chance to get paid and choose where I'd play, if I wanted to win I wouldn't be signing in a place that doesn't have a history of competing and is presently outside of a playoff spot. Sounds like posturing in the face of weak offers, but who knows?
I agree with you though, if the Flames try to run back with this core there are plenty of other things to do in the world, and money spends just as easily elsewhere.

I have a feeling the market is soft on Hanifin because I think he would only re-sign in a couple places (Calgary, Boston, ???)
Sure if teams are willing to give up a big return for him as a rental then you still move him, but if the offers are a late first and B prospect I'd have no issue re-signing him.
Need to move Lindholm and Tanev no matter what though.

What happened to the rumour we gave jersey permission to speak to Hanifin’s agent?

Haha yep, this is where my Flames brain takes me to the most probable and disappointing outcome. These insider info posts from connected posters leave us all with visions of Mercer or Holtz/1st/etc for a signed Hanifin dancing around in our heads, but in the end he'll get traded for a much weaker return because he won't sign with the teams willing to give up much better assets.

If its between trading him to one team (Boston) or signing him it's a no brainer. Sign him.

I want the Flames to move all the UFA’s but Hanifin is the one that you can make an argument he makes sense to keep regardless of the team retooling/rebuilding etc because he can be effective for 5+ years.

The team isn't interested in moving him and he isn't interested in moving. Some guys value location more than an outside chance at chasing a Cup.

I'm not saying that's not true, he still has to agree to sign there for an amount that New Jersey is willing to meet.
I think in the end Hanifin still re-signing is a contingency for the Flames in case a trade doesn't come to fruition that makes sense with a market he's willing to re-sign in.

Ok does it make sense to anyone else that restarting contract talks may be an indication that trade offers aren’t all that great

Could be a fact. Maybe the rumour that the Flames and Hanifan are talking is coming from the agent in an attempt to pressure another suitor....

If Hanifin is re signed then I hope to see 88 and 29 out the door along with 28 at bare minimum. Agree with you on the rotten core, need to change it up.

Financially he’s probably better ahead cost of living wise in yyc than nj. Expenses in cad, lower cost of living etc. if that’s any part of his motivation.
If this is true I think we should give kudos to Huska for creating a positive work environment where a player who had one foot out the door is willing to reconsider.
