If Conroy is waiting for a return to include a great 20 year old player still on his ELC……

What do people think the chances are that the team mostly keeps its UFAs if they are in a playoff spot or close to it by the deadline? Maybe trade Tanev but keep the rest. They've played pretty well tbh after the first ten games or so when they looked awful. I know not many would pick them to win it all but given the owners apparent preference to make the playoffs every year, this seems like a real possibility, maybe even the most likely one (I would personally hate it).

I don't think they do it. I have faith that Conroy is looking at the big picture and planning for the future. I doubt short term success is going to cloud his plans. Just my gut feeling.
There is some speculation that the Flames might trade Tanev as a rental to chase a Cup this year, but they might re-sign him in the offseason because he likes Calgary.

I think Conroy would sell all but will Edwards let him? I guess time will tell, it would be a different MO from him for sure.

I sure hope Edwards doesn’t put his foot down on trading them if the team is close to a playoff spot come deadline. But I don’t think that’ll happen. I really do think Conny is thinking long term with this team

Every indication is trades.
I don't think the fan base can stomach another mishandling of UFA contracts.

Edwards let Treliving trade Glencross while they were in the middle of a playoff race in 2014, and let him trade Hudler and Russell the following year when it was clear they were going to be drafting top-10.
A good spurt in the dead of winter is no reason to think ignore the last 18 months.

So you think he is worth a 2nd. I don’t see it but maybe someone would give up a 2nd round pick for him.

I doubt it’s Conroy’s choice, this is a hi-level decision.
But I expect they will decide to trade those they can’t sign.

Though it would have been nice to trade Glencross two seasons earlier when Feaster claimed that 29 teams called about him.
If the Flames have shown anything, it's that they barely get any worse when they trade players away. Youth gives the team energy. I hope Edwards has seen this.

Markstrom is playing well, sell him on chasing a cup. Maybe you deal Markstrom and Lindholm together. I'm sure the avs would love that.

Unless there are truly only brutal offers on the table (2nd/3rd round picks) I'd say the chances are quite slim. The only way this could work is if the Flames win the cup, and that's even more unlikely, and I would give management credit for being able to see this. If the Flames end the season with Lindholm, Hanifin or Tanev on the roster they will be in a terrible bargaining position, and may have to consider signing one or more of these guys above value in an effort to save face. That is how they came to be in the spot they are in, and I can't imagine any of the brain trust wanting to be in this position.
Management certainly wants to maximize the return on investment, and probably wants to extend this as long as possible in an effort to give the remaining players adequate runway to take a shot at the playoffs, but carrying unsigned FAs past the deadline would be foolish. If the Flames are forced to overpay to retain these players, expect more of the same, with diminishing results for years to come. I have to believe all involved can see this.
As an aside, I appreciate the team trying to keep a core of guys to guide the future, as players like Backlund, Coleman, Anderson.... will have a large impact on shaping the next window, but if I was those guys I would hope the Flames are able to gain some assets/picks that might produce some serious fruit in the next 2-3 years.

Nothing close, but Sens GM Steve Staios has definitely let it be known he wants to be aggressive on the trade front. Makeup of the team needs to be changed. Won’t involve Ottawa’s young talent. Staios is in a lot of conversations.

LAK already has Kopitar, Danault and PLD down the middle.

Have to think Tarasenko, Kubalik and Hamonic are on the market.

(Hanifin wouldn't be the worst to keep...but damn I hate this team keeping the core of this roster together)
