I think if it does get done it will be a while yet before Conny pulls the trigger. I think the team is going to try and put themselves in the playoff hunt and the longer you can hold into Hanifin the better. If course if NJ budges on Mercer then you pull the trigger but I don't expect they will. In the meantime you can still try and pressure them into it though while giving Kylington more time to see if he can make the jump back to the team. I am sure there are other teams calling on Hanifin as well and who knows, maybe a better offer comes from a desperate GM that doesn't want to miss out. If the 1st and Holtz is on the table but you would prefer a young C in the deal instead you can always circle back to that as we approach the deadline. The closer we get to the deadline the more pressure GM's feel and the more likely Conroy gets his ask.

I think it would take an add from the Flames if Mercer was a realistic possibility.

They wouldn't want to take a big hit up front with trying to compete now.

And no, I don't think Dube is the guy that gets it done lol.

If you are playing in the ECHL is it likely that you care a lot about your post-secondary education?

I think that is a choice you make and that NCAA hockey likely wouldn't have been a good fit for you either.

I think the trade proposals for Hanifin assume he is extended. That’s why people are suggesting Holtz is included. I agree with your trades being more realistic if Hanifin is just a rental. However, if Hanifin is extended as part of the trade, I think it could definitely include a player like Holtz.

Did you miss where I said the Devils have permission to speak with Hanifin's agent? The Devils are not trading for Hanifin as a rental.

Defensemen: Closer than it's ever been...Makar is still the best in the world but Fox, Hughes, McAvoy, Slavin...it's getting closer here too.

Forwards: The top couple guys are still Canadian (Mackinnon, McDavid, Crosby) but the Americans are no slouches with Matthews, Tkachuk, Hughes etc

In my opinion there really is no wrong answer at this point on CHL vs NCAA and either development stream is good and the right path would be dependent on your individual situation as a player.

At the NHL level it's closer than ever though. Of the top 31 point scorers in the NHL this season (38 points+) only 11 are Canadian.

I'm guessing there would be no other season where that few Canadians make up the top 30 point getters in the NHL.
I think the Americans are making up ground, how much that is to do with the numbers of players they have and their system being better than ours I think would have to be looked at.

But when you see that we still have the most top end talent drafted each year, the most players overall drafted each year, we put 3 competitive teams into the U18 tournaments vs 1 from every other country, won the last 2 WJHC's, was competitive in this tournament missing 6 players that would play in the top 6/top 4 of every team in the tournament that saying we have an archaic development system (not you but the original post by someone else that started this) is pretty hyperbolic and not really representative of what is actually happening in hockey development.

Hanifin and Hamilton both ending up on the Devils would be an interesting twist in the tale for both Hurricanes and Flames fans though.

Just send Lindholm back to Carolina to add to it.

Holtz or Mercer either one would be a great return in a deal for Hanifin. If we can get the first as well, great.

I didnt miss it. It just doesn't matter if it's a sign and trade. He's still a pending UFA. They get to talk to him early either way, having him signed before the trade won't increase his value to mercer or holtz+1st.

Please feel free to shiw me examples of pending UFAs or sign/trade UFAs getting that type of return.

:facepalm

If its a SIGN and trade. Then by definition he's not a Pending UFA. He's SIGNED.

The 1st is an automatic part of it.

The poster saying Holtz alone is a good return is either an oiler fan or losing it. Ones a multi year vet that has established himself at his position. One is still finding it at this level, even with his draft hype.

Holtz and a 1st for an extended Hanifin is a fair trade.

I might be too high on Holtz so probably would be fine with a 2nd if we can get him, but I don't think a 1st, especially from a team like Jersey that is going to good for the next 5 years, is too much to ask or makes the deal lopsided in our favor.

I think the challenge is more along the line of:

Show me another situation where a 26 year old top pairing defenceman was traded in-season.

Boston paid a 1st + 2nd + 2nd + somewhat recent 1st Urho Vaakanainen (2017 pick, trade was made in 2022) for pending UFA Hamphus Lindholm who was 28 years old. So there you go.

So, somewhere around two 1st round picks + two 2nd round picks...and Noah is two years younger.

Well, Vaakanainen was probably not treated liked a 1st round pick for trade purposes - this was 5 years after being drafted and he only had 31 NHL games at the time of the trade.

Yeah so that is probably a fair return.

1st + 2nd + 2nd + stillman.

I would argue that's a far off deal from mercer or holtz + 1st

Depends on if you value Hanifin more than H. Lindholm. I think you should.

Going into the trade negotiations while allowing them to try and sign him based on an agreed return he would still be a pending UFA.

And like I said. It doesn't matter. Show me refence examples of what you're defending so stalwartly.

Why are you making attacks at me instead of discussing the topic at hand. You guys grill spurs but you're no better. Infact your worse because you also try and high horse acting like you're not a troll.

Both are good players.
One is a top RFA. One is a pending UFA.
That's why it's unlikely.
