So let's all get our hopes up way too high here for a minute and let's assume some of the rumors are true...
If you can move Hanifin for Mercer + 1st
If you can move Lindholm for Byram + 1st
You replace Lindholm with Mercer. And replace Hanifin with Bryam. And pick up two 1st round picks along the way.
That would be unreal asset management.
I don't know...this all sounds way too good to be true to me and I think we are all going to be disappointed when the actual returns aren't nearly as good as what's being talked about or rumored.

They'll aim higher than Dube at the deadline.

Get more assets for a retained Tanev
Kylington slides into Tanev's spot...

I think if people are expecting Mercer and a 1st for Hanifin they are setting themselves up for disappointment.

I can’t remember the last rental that returned anything close to the either of those rumours. My expectations are a 1st and a couple seconds or the 3rd-8th best prospect in the other teams prospect pool

Without an extension i'd agree. With an extension it's definitely not out of the question in my opinion.

Don’t know why Hanifin wouldn’t be open to living across the river from Manhattan…

Which describes Holtz in the bigger picture. I would put him somewhere in the Devils' prospect base in the 3 through 5 range. Seems completely reasonable.

That’s fair I guess. I think of him as graduated though.

I just don't understand why New Jersey trades Mercer. I think it's a fantasy.
He's a 22 year old centre who is putting up .56 PPG this season (and .59 PPG through the first 200 games of his NHL career) on a young team building to compete.
Hughes, Hischier, Mercer is depth down the middle of a championship team.

Yeah I agree with what Lanny said earlier.
You ask for Mercer but happily take the 1st+Holtz when it comes down to it. I think Mercer is a big stretch at this point, he was a 50 point player last year and has more points at 5v5 than Lindholm the past two seasons (52 vs 49) it's a stretch to even ask for him IMO.

If you then look at where that New Jersey pick falls (say somewhere between 22 and 32), that then becomes Holtz + Yakemchuk/Mews/Basha/Danford/Hutson/Hage etc etc etc. That's a great return for Connie.
Ditto on any Colorado/Lindholm trade. Byram? Pure fantasy in my eyes. 2024 1st (in the same'ish range as above) + Ritchie or Gulyayev? Sign me up for that.
2024 1st + 2024 1st + Ritchie/Gulyayev + Holtz? That's dreamy.

Agreed. Hanifin should get a greater return if he is extended. Someone like Holtz could be in the mix in that case. It sounds like Lindholm will be a pure rental so I think he’ll return the normal package for a two-way center like him (1st round pick + 2nd round pick + B-level prospect). I don’t think you are getting Byram included in an unsigned Lindholm trade. I don’t think Byram will be available at all. Same goes for Mercer from New Jersey. Teams that are going for it hate to subtract from their roster - especially defencemen and centermen. It’s picks and prospects that are years away from contributing to a Stanley cup run instead.
You might be able to sweeten the deal for Colorado by including Tanev in a Lindholm trade:
To Colorado:
Lindholm (50% retained)
Tanev (50% retained)
To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick
Calum Ritchie
This trade has the added benefit of irritating the Oilers as you make an already stacked team in the West even better. If the oilers even made the playoffs they would have to face a monster of a Colorado team again.

See I'm less certain they wouldn't move Byram than I am that the Devils wouldn't move Mercer.
Byram is RFA after next season, has been good but not great, his injury history will always be a question mark, and with Makar and Toews locked in I think he could become trade bait.
I think management would have preferred to move Girard but I think his recent issues off ice, combined with some rumors that the locker room really missed him when he was gone and that he's a glue guy for them could have changed things.
Byram is kind of at that "Draft Pedigree might be more valuable than he actually is as a player" point of the trade value curve and I think they'd look at moving him.

These are really good points
The one thing I might add is there’s a decent chance that jersey misses the playoffs. They are in a tough division. Makes their first a more valuable

1st + holtz for a pending UFA is a huge stretch. People are getting way ahead of themselves.
Holtz for hanifin straight up would be a good deal and is unlikely.
Value range is somewhere around a mid-to-late 1st + 2nd + 3rd.
More realistic:
2024 1st + foote + 3rd
2024 1st + Casey
