The loss of Kylington really stings.

Best case scenario may be a returning vet defenseman that the acquiring teams sees as a Hanifin upgrade, but signed to less term.
Would give the Flames someone for this year and next so they don't blow their brains out in free agency, and get more value in the trade for taking the cap hit on.

I have a pretty long history of pointing out users that try to eliminate argument by suggesting any other view than their own is flawed or weak.

I just don’t see Colorado wanting the term of the deal but you know wink wink he blows a hip anything can happen in this league with LTIR.
|
I think even a million of cap retention makes Kadri a desirable player. Only 5 full years left now, and the cap is going up.

... that's 10 wingers that should be getting NHL reps and we have only 8 spots... + I imagine they'll want to change the mix of veterans in the offseason... like sign Duclair to try and get Huberdeau going or something like that + and the possibility that if our 1st round pick is talented enough he might go straight to the NHL.
|
Isn’t Zary a natural centre? He should be pretty easy to switch back. Still leaves a bit of a logjam.

Assuming they trade Hanifin, Lindholm, Tanev and one of Markstrom/Vladar without signing any big name players, their roster looks like this next season:
Mangiapane-Kadri-Posposil
Huberdeau-Zary-Sharongovich
Pelletier/Coronato-Backlund-Coleman
Greer-Ruzicka-Dube
Andersson-Weegar
Kyllington-Gilbert
Soloviov-Poirier
Vladar/Markstrom
Wolf
There will likely be growing pains for all the young players. Pelletier, Coronato, Poirier, Soloviov and Wolf will be trying to become full-time NHLers. Zary could be transitioning to center and could feel the sophomore slump like many players do. Kyllington (if he does return) could take time to regain his form after two years without playing.
All that makes for a team that works hard but struggles to win games IMO. This year pick in the 8-10 range. Next year pick in the top 5.
|
I’ll be very surprised if the Flames eschew the UFA market entirely and start next season with 12m+ in cap space. At the very least, I expect they’ll bring in a 3-4m forward and a 4-5m d-man.

Elliotte Friedman speculates that Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Brad Treliving offered several teams a sixth-round draft pick for a goalie, to which every team declined. He reportedly hoped a team would be desperate to move one
Luke Fox of Sportsnet speculates that Dan Vladar (Flames), Jake Allen (Canadiens), Eric Comrie (Sabres), & Anton Forsberg (Senators) were amongst the goalies Treliving targeted.
I see he hasn’t changed a bit.

Imagine Tre offering a 6th to get Vladar when he initially traded a 3rd to acquire him in the first place

Yeah... but we don't know if he'd be a good one at the NHL level and I'm kind of hoping that the empty C spot get's filled by Macklin Celebrini or Cayden Lindstrom or Conner Geekie or some other premium asset.

I get it’s speculation, but given the TDL trades he usually made and settling on depth players for mid picks, I think this speculation is likely spot on and the reason why the goalie market hasn’t been moved. Brad, it’s a sellers market when it comes to goaltending this season.
Imagine acquiring Vladar for a 3rd and then offering a 6th when he’s done nothing but keep his value the same if not better (with the term Vladar has).
Stay away from Toronto. Brad isn’t taking trades with anyone seriously.

Tre is drinking the leafs kool-aid, thinks even his draft picks are worth extra coming from Toronto.
I wish him nothing but failure going forward.

There are quite a few goaltenders out there.
If you're sitting on one and want to make sure you get him dealt before the deadline maybe you bite.
No GM is out there leads with a final offer, so he's smartly testing the market to see if anyone is getting edgy.
The Tre dislike can get pretty imaginative.

I'm still hoping they trade Tanev at the deadline and re-sign him in the summer to a friendly two year deal. Yes, his overall game will be declining but he still has a lot of experience to share with the young defencemen that will be coming into the lineup.

Moving a goalie to a team that is struggling isn't just about the pick you get back. You're also throwing a potential life preserver to a competing team like the Oilers whose goalies are brutal and potentially making yourself look really bad if that goalie gets hot when you know they will walk into a starting job. No way anyone ships a goalie of any quality out for a 6th. That's boat anchor contract or journeyman AHL caliber territory

Geekie brings an element we haven't had since Iggy left.
Not sure how keen AZ is on trading him, but that would be a fantastic start to a trade for Hanifin.
Yes please.
