So 54M/87.7M tied up in 5 of 22 players next year.
Tavares/Matthews/Nylander/Marner/Reilly
Average of 2.1M per player outside of those 5 to maximize the cap

For all we know, Treliving was the guy saying no rebuilds to Edwards. After several years of trying to build something, I don't imagine it would be easy for Treliving to go to Edwards and tell him that he failed and and would have to rebuild. For all we know, Treliving was the guy pushing that narrative up the chain.
Having a fresh voice telling Edwards how it is could be all it takes.

Nylander at 11.5 would be a coup for the Leafs. If they run into cap trouble they can always trade one of the big guys. There’d be lots of demand for all of them except Tavares.

They already do....except Nylander who has a 10 team NT list.
Any new deal will almost certainly have a full NMC though.

It’s why there is no way that Tre wants to deal Minton or Cowan since almost 100% likelihood they will be playing for the big club next year to meet cap requirements.

Treliving seemed more about quick fixes. Talked about cooking guy on the farm then bringing in guys that came with their own set of baggage. Some of his moves handcuffed the team Apart from the initial potential signings Conroy seems more patient. Hopefully he realizes we don't need to sign guys to crazy money just to keep them. Infusion of home grown youth is paying dividends.

Kind of interesting if you piece together rumors.
Lindy for Byram, Byram take Hanifins slot, Hanifin for McLeod ++ McLeod takes Lindholms statistical spot. (I.e similar stats minus some assists). We don't get worse and get some extra bits out of it.
|
McLeod has 26 career NHL goals in 277 game and 80 career points.
lindholm has 3 seasons where he had more than 26 goals and one season where he has more than 80 points.
Picking up McLeod would be like picking up a ####ty Jason Wiemer.

Boy I wish there was something we could do with Hanifin and the Coyotes to land Connor Geekie.

What about Hayton? Could be a Backlund clone. I think Cooley and Geekie are the Yotes’ future, Hayton would be a good middle 6 C here. Wouldn’t be as expensive either.

If I had to guess they will probably trade marner in off season. He only has one year left on his deal. Has a NMC so he pretty much gets to pick which team/teams he will be traded to .

Marner the type of player (and age) hawks should go hard after to play with Bedard.

Toronto will be done with the Tavares contract after next year, will be interesting to see what horrible UFA treliving trots outs next off season.

Treliving learning the hard way with Lewis Gross clients about their contract year. I have little doubt Johnny would have signed for $9.5Mx8 before his 115pt season. Reports were Nylander wanted in the $10M range before the season but has now played his way into $11.5M
Just like Johnny it could prove to be risky to sign a guy based primarily off a career season where his goal is to get paid

I'm pretty sure they are going to do whatever it takes to keep the trio of Marner, Nylander, and Matthews together. Also I wouldn't be surprised if Tavares re-signs with the Leafs on a very team friendly deal so he can keep wearing Leafs pajamas to bed. They won't likely ever win a cup with this group but they will always be good enough to be relevant in the regular season until they start getting into their 30's and Treliving has buried them with bad contracts on depth players and failed goaltenders.

It's certainly not team-friendly. Will be tough to fill out your roster when you're overpaying your 90pt wingers (Marner included) by 1.5M each.
I'm a firm believer at this point that the top wingers in the league should only be paid 80% of what the top centers earn. The range for top ufa centers appears to be 10M-13M, so that'd put the range for a top ufa winger at 8M-10.5M.

I think they ought to move at least a couple of wingers on top of Lindholm (So Dube + 1 or 2 more).
Connor Zary
Jonathan Huberdeau
Andrew Mangiapane
Jakob Pelletier
Yegor Sharangovich
Blake Coleman
Martin Pospisil
Dillon Dube
Walker Duehr
Matthew Coronato
... that's 10 wingers that should be getting NHL reps and we have only 8 spots... + I imagine they'll want to change the mix of veterans in the offseason... like sign Duclair to try and get Huberdeau going or something like that + and the possibility that if our 1st round pick is talented enough he might go straight to the NHL.
