Yes they have.

Consider it a warning.

Any more of that crap from yesterday (pretending I was talking about myself, pretending others aren't talking about you), or just ignoring good arguments to further your chaos and it's done.

I do that with maximum retention for that type of return.

I'd probably do it just for the 1st though.

Rather, I think that ownership has simply believed that you shouldn't have to execute a long re-build to have a contender. I think it's stubbornness more than anything. Perhaps with a business man who is used to getting what he wants.

I don't know though. A lot of guesswork on my part.
Yeah, I think it is more because the ownership is made up of men who like to win and have won a lot in the business side of life. I have maintained for a while now that I think it is less about having an equation where being in the mushy middle keeps the dome full to an acceptable level but more that Edwards just wants to win every single season.

I think a lot of the butts in the seat thinking comes from the era where the Flames actually almost had to move but the economics are way different now and I just don't really think Edwards cares if he breaks even on a cash flow basis over winning a cup.
People also gloss over the fact that the Flames rebuilt after Iggy wanted out for some reason. They didn't optimize all of their assets rolling into it but they could have held onto Bouwmeester and signed more UFAs.

I'd do it for a single 2nd round pick with no retention

It would be totally mental not to say yes to this.

I would even retain on that return.

If the Devils were offering that then I think Markstrom would be on a plane unless he prefers Calgary over having a chance to win.

They did re-build but it's been reported that ownership demanded it be an accelerated re-build. And then when the team won a playoff round early in the process - that probably made them think they could do it.

I don't think they committed enough to a proper re-build.

Last years team playing at a collective career average likely would have been top 3 in the division.

Treliving took a swing and missed. But I don't think ANYONE predicted the NHL's second leading scorer and previous years Vezina candidate to turn into a pumpkin overnight. Kadri I can see from the number of games he played, but anyone who foresaw what happened last year should take me to Vegas.

Agreed. I don’t recall the last time a goaltender was traded for a return of that level. I know there are several teams this year that are desperate for goaltending so maybe this year will be different. A year ago, the flames would have had to provide a first round pick for any team to take on Markstrom’s contract… yet now it sounds like the flames could actually get assets back for him. It’s wild what a difference a year can make.

Just because it's a new year...but here is a cap space update for potential buyers.

Teams in LTIR:

Leafs: $341k (No players returning to fit in)
Lightning: $390k (No players returning to fit in)
Avalanche: $5.7M (Lehkonen - $4.5M)
Vegas: $3.5M (Theodore - $5.2M)
Capitals: $5.2M (Oshie - $5.7M, Milano - $1.9M)
Canucks: $3.7M (Soucy - $3.2M)
Kings: $3.3M (Arvidsson - $4.25M)
Penguins: $2.9M (Rust - $5.1M)
Bruins: $2.7M (Forbort - $3.0M)
Islanders: $9.9M (Pulock - $6.2M, Pelech - $5.8M)
Oilers: $1.0M (No players returning to fit in)
Rangers: $6.5M (Chytil - $4.4M, Kakko - $2.1M)

So the problem for the Flames is all these teams have no cap space, aren't accruing cap space, and the players they have returning are important pieces. So unless they are done for the season you need to leave room to fit them back in.

Flames will have to retain, and likely take a bad contract back if they want to be able to deal with any of these teams. Big thing here though is any of these teams have no incentive to wait until the deadline to make a deal, they aren't accruing cap space anyways so really they can make a trade now if they are going to remain in LTIR anyways.

Teams Accruing Cap Space

Dallas: $37K / $100k
St. Louis: $1.1M / $2.9M
New Jersey: $1.5M / $4.0M
Winnipeg: $1.9M / $4.9M
Flyers: $2.3M / $6.7M
Panthers: $1.3M / $6.0M
Hurricanes: $3.2M / $8.3M
Detroit: $4.3M / $10.9M
Arizona: $6.0M / $15.5M
Nashville: $14.6M / $37.6M

These are the teams where waiting until the deadline would probably garner the biggest return on a trade. The cap accumulation plus possible retention will make it easier for teams to fit guys in then.

Overall though as much as I'd love to see a trade here right away this view make it tough to see exactly how it's going to happen.

Hopefully they learned optimizing assets will actually accelerate a rebuild this go around. I also think Tre gets to skate on his terrible UFA management because of the mandate to be competitive though.

So a lot of folks evaluated the trade with that in mind, instead of ignoring those realities completely.

It's easy to say a team should re-build if you choose to completely ignore the role that ownership plays in allowing for that.
A lot of other factors at play too. Other team's were holding onto their pics tightly last year and no competitors could afford to take on cap. The Flames have a bunch of solid depth pieces that are very hard to replace. It made sense to run it out one more year and see what was there.

The Flames are making the correct move now, by not giving out he long term vet contracts and selling the players off now.

What really F-ed the team was giving Huberdeau a contract that couldn't be bought out or traded. I wasn't there for negotiations obviously, but his contract seems like it has excessive restrictions given how much money they are paying him.

Well, it is one fewer year they have to pay him. That’s worth something…$6 million.

But you’re right about how perception has changed - at least here, I’m not sure about fans of other teams. If some team offers anything with no retention I’d take it.

I doubt anyone predicted exactly how it would happen, I agree if they did they should be in Vegas for sure. But people definitely predicted the Flsmes would miss the play-offs and more had them in the bubble maybe making it/maybe not.
