that would be a steal for the Flames if we are being honest
contract being the biggest factor

It was a choice. Flames could have done the trade and bought out Lucic, or just kept Neal with no buyout.
A buyout gives you instant gratification in exchange for prolonged and delayed pain, which you could argue made sense for Edmonton.
Not a bad deal for the Flames though.

Maybe you need to think before typing
They chose the buyout because it gave them the instant cap saving, of course they have to pay for it longer. That was their choice.

They got 84 games over two seasons out of Neal and McDavid scored 24 off his shins or butt before buying him out. It’s not like they acquired him for Lucic and bought him out the next day.

Johnny has outscored Hubby 14-0 in December, just scoring in OT.
It’s not happening.

Poeple need to accept there is no getting rid of Huberdeau right now. Unless you attach a ransom of picks and prospects that would make you throw up.

Man, a lot of teams must be getting really itchy trigger fingers. Washington's got injuries, Leafs are drown in sucky goaltending and weak defensive depth. That's just based off of tonight's headlines let al9ne the rest of the teams where looking for goaltending and defensive depth.
Would not shock me in the least to see some trades this weekend.

What the hell is going on with Samsonov? 2.33 GAA, .919 % in 42 games last year, to 3.94 GAA, .862 % in 15 games this season.

Detroit, Toronto, Edmonton, Carolina, New Jersey, Colorado,
I don't remember a year with so many teams that have playoff or Stanley cup aspirations that need a goalie.

yeah and it was a terrible choice...they didn't win #### all with the instant cap savings and now as their window dwindles they have even less cap space
IE the Oilers lost the trade big time
its not even a debate, the Flames won the Neal/Lucic swap by a landslide in hindsight
If the Oilers kept Lucic they would have won the same amount of cups the last 3 years and have over 2M more cap space

Put me in the camp that thinks Markstrom will waive if he sees guys like Hanifin / Tanev and especially Lindholm move.
I get he may be comfortable here but he has a legitimate chance to make a run at a cup over the next couple years with a few of the teams looking for a goalie right now.
By the time he is in a contract year in Calgary his defence won't look anything like it does now and that may hurt his next deal.

I don't disagree, but just to push back on your point a little. I could argue that the Oilers would've had 4M less cap space in those seasons. They might have missed the playoffs entirely without the likes of Keith or Kane. Which would've meant the Flames advancing to the conference final instaed.
I think it was mostly a good deal for both teams because EDM was planning on using a buyout, while Calgary didn't. Personally I liked Lucic a lot more than Neal during his stay in CGY.

He'll be 35, his next deal won't be much anyway

Unless they choked against the Kings(or whoever they would have played) too.

If he wins a few rounds it will be much more than him putting up .875 ~ behind a garbage defence in Calgary that no longer has Tanev/Hanifin +

According to a recent article by Lebrun in the Athletic, he can see a world where the Devils (bolstered by being without Dougie Hamilton's salary until the end of the season) aquire both Tanev AND Markstrom in a Mega-deal.
