Buffalo got Krebs and could have gotten Zary. Ottawa got Brannstrom. Zach Dean was traded in the Barbashev deal. Cal Foote got dealt, though he might be considered a bit of a bust deal.

This idea that good prospects don't get traded is crazy. Of course they do, when it makes sense for the team giving them up (Forsberg says hi, and he is far from alone).
Lindholm and Hanifin are both the high-level type of players that will convince some GMs that it is worth it to pay up for them. We need to be patient, and let the offers improve, as teams get more motivated.

He’s exceeded expectations in the nhl so far but when he was traded he was very highly regarded. More than his draft position would suggest

Chychrun, Pinto and a pick for Hanifin and Lindholm? too much or too little from us?

Basically just kicking the can down the road.
Hanifin and Lindholm should be traded for as many high end picks as possible IMO

Yep, and teams aren’t wanting to deal right now with so much parity. I’m sure teams want a sizable lead in the standings, at least enough for one to warrant a move. Or, maybe someone pulls an Isles and makes a move pronto.

Sucks that while we need to unload a goaltender, the team most desperate for one is Edmonton.
Hypothetical. Would you guys do this or is giving them Markstrom absolutely forbidden:
To EDM
Markstrom (CGY retains 1M)
To CGY
Campbell
Broberg
2 x 1st round picks
1 x 2nd round pick

Nah I’m enjoying their endless buyout cycle.
If you want to deal Markstrom talk to Jersey

I want no part in helping Edmonton solve their problems. Let them rot.

Campbell is now the backup on their AHL squad; no way should the Flames, or any team, take on that albatross.
Make it 3 first-rounders plus the other parts? Maybe.

I would do that for the 2 edmonton 1sts. Markstrom couldn't fix them.

You're still helping them get out of the Campbell contract. Pass.

Franchise-type players do sometimes get traded as prospects. Sometimes it is (1) an idiot GM, (2) sometimes that prospect just hasn't blossomed yet (or needs a change of scenery to really blossom), (3) or it is just a shrewd but painful trade to get the team over the hump.
1) Milbury traded Mukalt, Chara and a 1st (Spezza) for Yashin.
2) Players like Patrick Sharp and Tukka Rask were throw-ins, and became important players.
3) Calgary has been on both sides of the last one; Iginla - Nieuwendyk when they were 'rebuilding', and Brett Hull + Steve Bozek - Rob Ramage + Rick Walmsley
That last trade looks terrible on paper, but Flames probably don't win their one and only cup without it, and I would do it over and over again, even knowing what Hull would become.
Is it common? No, it isn't common for a top prospect to be traded, and I imagine it has happened less since the cap has been instituted and impact players on their ELCs are a huge advantage. However, it certainly can and does happen. There is no reason to be so sure that the Flames can't find a few future core players out of these deals, and one or two may end up as franchise-level stars (either from the prospects included in the deal, or from the picks).
As for Meier - vs Huberdeau, there is no way Jersey considers it at this point. Meier is priced lower, and his contract isn't as buyout proof as Huberdeau's, plus Huberdeau has a full season and nearly a half of being ineffective, with it trending down further thus far. If the Flames ever want to trade Huberdeau, he just has to get back to being a productive player again. I don't think it is going to happen with Backlund and Coleman, but hopefully playing with those two will help him become a more rounded defensive player for now. After the trade deadline, with fresh faces and probably no more pressure, he finds a couple of line-mates that help him get going again. Wouldn't be so out of the question. It isn't like he has given up and doesn't care. Right now, I doubt New Jersey would be interested. Down the road? Lots can change, and it may be the Flames that wouldn't be interested.
Right now, what do you do with Kadri? Keep him since he has been playing fantastic and is the centre on the most dynamic line for the Flames? Or if someone calls on him, do you trade him? If the Flames are going to get younger, then competing is probably going to get pushed down the road somewhat, and Kadri isn't a young guy - I think the Flames would at least listen to offers on Kadri. If the Flames are not competitive next season, will Kadri still be this effective, or will he look more like last season's Kadri? One would also assume as every season passes, he will be less effective. I don't think you have to trade him, but I do think if there is an interested team, you listen to offers.

"Good prospects" means alot of different things.
There's a pretty big difference between someone like Krebs (when he got traded) and holtz for example. Both were good prospects but Holtz is more valuable then krebs would of been.
Holtz has a higher pedigree and has already shown he can produce at the NHL level.

Rask was not a throw-in - he was traded straight up for Andrew Raycroft, who the Leafs thought was going to be their guy.

And IIRC it was either Justin Pogge or Rask that the Leafs were going to move and they choose to move Rask...oops

I’m not a big fan of Chychrun the way he made a trade demand at his age right after signing a long term deal. It raises questions about his character to me.

At the same time can anyone really blame a player for wanting to get out of the gong show that is the Coyotes organization.
