It might, but then we are asking for a massive return. We're giving two assets with potential value AND taking a 50% (~$2.5 million real dollars) AND two cap dumps.

Return for Lindy alone has to be ~1st + prospect (probably B prospect)

Markstrom alone is probably a 2nd or 3rd with recent trends and lack of goalies league wide.

Retention + the dumps are worth quite a bit... I just don't see it.

Necas+ Deangelo+Andersen +1st 2024 + Nikishin?

Necas isn't happening. He is the most valuable piece in your trade and Lindholm vs Necas is at best a wash for them and probably leaves them worse off in a few years.

Man, Carolina has a pretty deep prospect pool. They won’t give up D Alexander Nikishin, but I would trade Lindholm straight across to get him, if it weren’t for the Russian factor.

D Scott Morrow or LW Brad Nadeau would be amazing, as would RW Felix Unger-Sorum or D Aleksi Heimosalmi.

That's because in a "down year" at the draft they still pick 7 players. But most years they go into the draft with a crap ton of picks.

From 2019-2021 they picked 33 players at the draft. THIRTY THREE

That's plus 12 picks from their original 21

During this period they made the playoffs every year, won 4 rounds in 3 seasons, won a division title.

Then they "only" picked 7 players in 2022, but in last years draft they picked 10 players again. That was while winning their division 3 straight seasons and won 3 more playoff rounds.

Sustainable success starts with the draft. Flames need to do this, starting now. They've clearly been doing it wrong for way too long.

What happens when you start adding every year from within, on ELC's, a Gaudreau, a Rasmus, a Dube, a Mangiapane, a Zary, a Wolf? You have to start trading some of them away because you can't keep them all, and what do you get? More picks, that's what.

You gotta give to get, and if we don’t get a good prospect + in a trade for Lindholm, then Conny is getting fleeced.

Exactly this. Carolina is basically the model that any small market should be following. Always be drafting more than the basic 7 each year. Fill holes from within. Trade surplus players for more draft picks. Never sign UFAs, unless it's from the bargain bin. Never sign players to their retirement contracts. Lock young players up for as long as possible, if you think they're in your long term plans. If they aren't in your long term plans, trade them for more picks.

I'm sure Carolina has made a few mistakes along the way if you dig deep, but as an overall philosophy, this is the model a team like the Flames should be trying to emulate.

A recent study ranked the Flames 2nd when it comes to drafting, normalized for # of picks and how high those picks are. Dallas 1st.

The Flames draft VERY well. They just haven't valued them highly enough. They need to lean into the very part of their organization that is elite.

But the numbers show they are already elite at drafting.

I was going to say that the drafting is fine, and the development side has improved astronomically. Need more picks, and higher ones if possible.

I don't think the Canes will trade Nikishin. They will be patient because when he comes over he instantly will be a great player for them, and on a cheap entry level contract. There's some advantages to these Russian contracts. Philly will have the same benefit with Michkov. When he comes over he will be a better player but still on the cheap entry deal. Huge cap advantage.

But yeah i agree trying to get Morrow or Nadeau would be great. They've got a bunch of other skilled, but undersized guys that are intriguing. Get them to throw in one of them. They have too many anyways. I'll take Justin Robidas.

Oh yeah, I have no illusions they would trade Nikushin, he’s a superstar in the making.

I agree about their drafting and believe they are continuing to get better at development. My post should have read "+ Be elite at drafting and development", as in, keep putting the resources into these areas and maintaining them.
