Andersson is going to be 30 years old when his next contract kicks in. I'd rather not pay $8.5M for age 30-38 for him when he's already not the most fleet of foot defender.
Also I think it would be a mistake to assume he wants to stay anyways if the team is on the verge of missing the playoffs for the 4th straight season.
Andersson will likely never have more trade value than he will this offseason, and the Flames would be foolish to at least not listen to that.

Vegas is already known for shipping out guys regardless of if they like it there or not, that’s the point. And I don’t think it’s about building a long term contender, I think this is the type of move that puts a cap on a team’s ceiling.
I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that maybe they chat with Andersson and his agent instead of just assuming he wants to stay through the retool. They don’t just have to make the mistake of “assuming.”
And when a guy has the most trade value is a guessing game. He might have more value after next season. He might have even more value 4.5 years from now after we win the cup. But I also think that list of players works against your point, because most of those guys are ones we should have signed long term or not traded/let go.
Ultimately our best window to win is within the next 4-5 years. The clock starts ticking from when our first round pick this year starts his ELC. Look at the teams that have won cups over the past 15 years. It’s a mix of high-value vets and great players on their ELC.
By that point, it’ll just be Andersson, Weegar, Kadri, and Huberdeau. That’s it. Backlund, Coleman, Mangiapane, Dube, Tanev, Lindholm, Hanifin, and 3-4 more forwards plus the rest of today’s defensive core will be gone. Out of the vets that’ll still be here, one was drafted by the Flames. I think it’s a foolish choice to move him just to collect more assets.

This is how you build a long term contender
|
Trading away the guys who will be the key vets in your next competitive window is how you build another Edmonton or Buffalo. You still need to protect that mix and have guys within the organization that are bought in and know what it takes to become good pros.
You can’t just be open for business and willing to trade everyone for anything once the price is met. You have to have an eye on what, exactly, you’re trying to build and who fits. If you’re going to trade a player that wants to be here and is young enough to still be a contributor on the other side of your retool, just to go out and start looking for an asset to replace that player, that’s bad management.

Riccio on Canuck Central yesterday gave a great talk on rebuilds, and while he likes to see a full tear down, he could not provide an example of it actually working in 5 years or less.
As a Team Tank member, I recommend listening to the segment on the podcast.

Heard he's not all that happy here.
But certainly not from the source. One of those conversations that goes "my buddy is his neighbour ..."

Man that's a frustrating narrative if true. This whole 'want out of Calgary' thing is getting f'ing tiring to hear over and over.

I hope he’s giving you free orange Julius coupons.
Seriously, if it’s not from a source, why even post it? Especially if it’s to refute a post from someone with inside information.

For Kadri it would probably make some sense at least.
He was sold on this team being a contender. We are now looking like it's a rebuild / retool at the very least.
Of course he's probably wishing he was still on a top team in the league in Colorado.

Is it really that surprising that he doesn't like the Flames (not Calgary)?
He signed on being told they were going to compete for the cup, he wants to win again and he's 33.

Yep, Kadri signed with the Flames after they put up 110 points and despite some big changes they still looked decent on paper. 1.5 years later and the GM that signed him is gone, they already had a coaching change, missed the playoffs and are trending towards a rebuild and years of sucking.

Regardless of whether he likes it here or wants out, at least he has been professional enough to up his game lately. I wasn't saying that end of last year or beginning of this year.
Hopefully that carries through the end of the season. I still think he is really tough to move with that contract.
Calgary will never be confused with Vegas or Miami but Conroy seems intent on building a certain culture here and I hope it works. These are hockey players after all so they understand cold weather and creating a first class organization that treats athletes well could make a difference in the long run.

The only way Andersson is dealt is if the Flames are planning a dive-to-the-bottom-of-the-standings-for-four-seasons rebuild. There’s no reason besides wishful thinking to believe that’s the strategic direction of the franchise.
In all likelihood, the Flames are going to sell off their UFAs, maybe move on from Dube, and then dive into the UFA market in the summer to pick up a veteran C and a couple of solid D-men who can play on the second pairing. They’re not stripping this roster down to the studs.

It’s also been in local media that Kadri signed here to be on a competitive, contending team and because of that if the Flames pivot, they’ve questioned whether he’d want to be here or not.
Naz has been fire this season - and the team still isn’t a playoff team, forget contender. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Kadri leave Calgary in the next 18 months.

I’d argue, if it came from a source it’d be worth discussing. Why should we care what your neighbour said?

Why should we care what you say? Why should we care what anyone says? It's a discussion board, that's why. Don't like it? Don't have to reply.
