San Jose got off to the worst start I can recall for any team and they are still ahead of Chicago. It's pretty pointless to try for last against that team.

Looks like Chris Tanev is back in tonight for Calgary. He’s back skating with Noah Hanifin at a well-attended optional morning skate.
Tanev has missed the last three games with an upper body injury. #Flames

A couple posters have mockingly brought up the “we’re too good to tank” notion as though it was a statement along the lines of “just get in” but really it was this. The Flames have too many horses to out-(not?)compete the bottom rung for a top 3 pick.
Stay the course, trade the UFAs, focus on creating a good atmosphere for the young guys where winning and actually giving a #### still matter, and see where we land. We’ll likely drop off a bit without guys like Hanifin, and maybe the lottery gives us a hand, but I’d rather the Flames be right where they are and enjoy every good moment guys like Zary are giving us than cheer for losses.
Getting a guy like Celebrini would be exciting, but I’m not going to let it ruin any excitement there is now.

Especially when you look at the first overall lottery odds.
Flames currently 6.0%. If they were a touch better it would be 3.5%, and if they fall as far as is likely possible it maybe 8.5%.
That's a lot of misery to want losses every night when the spread is 5%.

Let's go Panthers! (for tonight only)

Wtf no thanks.
Cheering for a win - still 51 games to go, i'm not packing it in this early with that oilers mentality.

It almost worked for Vladar against the Wild. It was the 3rd shot but close enough. He played well the whole rest of the game.

This. I'd rather not be miserable or indifferent the whole season. I still want to see them compete and win. If that means a few draft positions down, I'm fine with that.

Cheering for losses as a Flames fan is pretty stupid. Even if we finish last in the league we would lose the draft lottery and draft 4th.

And yet that's still better than missing the playoffs by 6 points, finishing 10th in the conference and picking 14th.
Not that cheering for losses makes sense but it's more "Happy if they win, and silver lining if they lose is a better draft pick".

It's not just about #1 overall. The difference between the top 3-4 and the rest is pretty Huge.
I'm not cheering for losses, but I will admit I don't mind the losses. I actually have found this last two months product better than it's been in since they year that the Flames won the conference (minus that awful playoffs of course). Watching this young team play hard and come up slightly short and occassionally pull off the comeback is quite entertaining.

Yeah the difference between a top 5 pick and a top 15 pick can be huge.
You still have to draft well...but drafting well in the top 5 means you could get a franchise altering player like Pettersson or Makar.
Drafting well in the top 15 can get you a really good player, and it's still possible to get a franchise guy like a McAvoy, but really it's way harder to do that and you're more likely to get a good piece like a Noah Dobson or Cole Caufiled. Still good players, but not that top end elite player.

Depends on the draft. It's not totally clear to me where the ledges are in this draft.
You've got a clear #1 pick.
And then you've got Eiserman who is the assumed #2 but I'm not convinced that he will be, primarily because he's a high scoring winger, and teams may prefer the centre or D at 2.
So my view is that after Celebrini, there may not be much difference between 2-8ish. You've got a real strong mix of high offense wingers, great dmen and a couple more centres all the way perhaps to even 10.
My point is the difference between the 4th pick and the 7th pick in this draft may not be big.
These were Pronman's tiers in early Nov:
Tier 1 (bubble elite NHL player): Celebrini
Tier 2 (NHL All star): Silayev (D) and Eiserman
Tier 3 (Bubble NHL All star/top of line up player): Levshunov (D), Demidov (RW), Yakemchuk (D)
Tier 4 (Top of line up): Berkly Catton (D), Adam Jiricek (D), Sam Dickinson (D)
That takes you to 9, and then you have guys like Cayden Lindstrom, and Konsta Helenius (both centres, that therefore could go higher than that) in the next tier.

especially in a game against a guy who bailed on the team hurt the franchise big time

I just noticed capfriendly saying Honzek has been loaned yesterday. I'm not entirely sure what that means. Any insight?
https://www.capfriendly.com/transact.../samuel-honzek
NVM Found it: Slovakia world Juniors team. I thought the flames might have thrown a curveball and recalled him somehow for the holidays.

Technically I'm cheering for a Panthers win, so I have a nice loophole that way.

Not cheering for losses, no matter how much it helps our draft position. Actively trying to tank is poor and sets a terrible example for young players. Wins are good for morale...and hard-fought, close losses are acceptable, even if not the result one wants.
Let's not go Oiler....because we all know E=NG.

I'd wager Cayden Oindstrom is gonna. Be tier 2 by day. And the fact you don't have him in any tier is crazy.
