It’s not a must, it’s to increase the trade value.

You are not getting any more trade value than retaining 50%. A team like Colorado would rather keep Johansson and add Lindholm than have to deal him away.

I think a few people need to remember that the flames are probably going to retool, not rebuild. A cap dump for the rest of this year and maybe next year is the most I can see happening. I think they'll want the cap space to go after UFA's, to try and be competitive in a year or 2 at most.

Of course a team doesn't need to add a cap dump. However, they might give you better assets if you take on a guy that doesn't fit their team as well. Especially if that guy is signed for another year.
---
Regarding the Penguins: I just hope that they stay in the middle of the standings, and don't go into a rebuild this year. I think it could potentially flood the market with the likes of : Guentzel, Pettersson, or even Sid.

I don't.
The media and fans there would make his critics in Calgary look like fanboys. Everything is the goalie's fault even when it isn't.
Toronto is the only Canadian team I think he would waive to go to since Vancouver and Winnipeg aren't options. Montreal and Ottawa are in no better shape than Calgary.

Sure you are, if the team acquiring the player is cap strapped and wants to make other moves.

Sure in the right circumstances but the two that were just used were Johansson and Rackell, both those teams are better off adding Lindholm while retaining those players. I was just saying that with the contract Lindholm has you can retain and don't necessarily have to take a cap dump back.

Re Lindholm: How much are people expecting to get for a 60-65pt two-way center who’s a pending UFA? What’s a comparable trade people are looking at? The O’Reilly trade to Toronto?

1st + Yager for Lindholm?
That's a homerun in my eyes.
Rakell being included as a cap dump? Meh either way.

The Rakell trade is 100% dependent on how you view him.
Is he an 82 game, 60pt player? Or is he an injury prone player who has played one full season in the last 5, and his 4 assists in 17 games this season (before being hurt) is a sure sign that he is about to drop off completely?
He is signed for 4 more seasons at 5 million after this season. I look at him as being a cap dump with little upside at this point, and a huge risk. Monahan took a 1st to dump a single year of $6.375 million. If you think that Rakell is still a player that has positive value and will continue having positive value over most of the next 4 years after this season, than this is a fantastic deal that the Flames should jump all over. i look at Rakell as a player who is about to fall off the precipice of a mountain top into the canyon below. That's 4.5 years at 5 million bucks.
Also, you have to factor-in the existing contracts. Maybe the Flames could absorb a Rakell, but at some point in that 5 years, the Flames will be trying to become competitive. With the Huberdeau contract on the books, as well as Kadri, adding Rakell's last 2 seasons will keep the Flames in the 'mushy middle' in my opinion. Too good with the new core drafted/acquired in trades to be a lottery team, too many cap-heavy deals to keep them from being competitive enough.
Just say no to long-term risky deals. Yes to short term cap negative deals.

At this rate that is the best comparable, wirh maybe a 3 party team that can take on cap too for the Lindholm-acquiring team if need be.

Probably a fair comparable both in terms of what he will return in a trade and what he will get for a contract as a UfA. I think he will make a little more money, maybe as high as 6.5 million a year. But I think RoR is a good comparable across the board.

ROR was older and had 19 points in 40 games at the time of the trade. Lindholm already has 19 in 30 right now.
The Horvat trade is probably actually a better comparable...they hadn't agreed to an extension yet at the time of the trade.
But a 1st, A level prospect, and potentially another piece is probably what you're looking at.

Sounds like Carolina is calling up their top goalie prospect right from the ECHL. Not sure I've ever seen a player called up from the ECHL to the NHL before.
As an aside it's pretty crazy that Carolina doesn't have an AHL affiliate.
Way to invest nothing into player development. Honestly negligent by a franchise to just leave their player development in the hands of other organizations pretty much.

They don't have an AHL team because Chicago wants to be independent ended the agreement, and there wasn't a spare franchise in the AHL

If this management groups think their going to sign a couple UFAs in a year or two and be competitive were doomed.

If we were a contender would a 1st, Pelletier, and a 3rd be reasonable for Lindholm? I'm honestly not sure. I'm expecting a 1st as a staring point but after that I could see it getting watered down.

Horvat had over a PPG and was on pace for 50 goals when he was traded. That is a player who was playing at a much higher level than Lindholm currently is.
