The Flames constant desire to have Oesterle or DeSimone (neither of which are NHL defenders) in the lineup this season is, IMO, an indication that the team recognizes the need for a puck moving defenseman.
Barrie checks a few boxes as far as PP QB and puck mover. However he misses a lot of boxes. He's older and on the decline and quite frankly hasn't been very good for a while now. He has a big cap hit for his role, albeit only for this season. Like, the team just moved Zadorov for a 3rd and a 5th to create some cap space to help with future deals, and now they're going to turn around and give up something for another older, overpriced 5/6 PP specialist D?
That makes no sense to me. I sure hope that the Insiders are wrong on this one because just on a fundamental 'good asset management' level I don't think it's smart for this team to invest any assets into trying to save this season, or handcuff themselves on future deals by having absolutely no cap space to work with, all so they can pay Tyson Barrie 4.5 mill to only play the PP.
It's a real shame Piorier got injured. It'd be great to see what he can do.

If the Flames took Barrie, I think we’d see assets coming here, not to Nashville. Like the Monahan deal.

I'd be shocked if Nashville gave up anything of significance to move Barrie. Asking Nashville to retain just causes the price to go up.
Seems like a goofy fit from the Flames end.

I would take Barrie (assuming no acquisition cost).
Run him on PP1 and hope he starts putting up points - then you might get a late pick for him at the deadline (just when Poirier is getting healthy)

Speculation on Barrie, makes no sense.. Why would the Flames bring in a pending UFA.
(assuming there would an acquisition cost)

And that is simply because of the metrics in Conroy trading with Treliving and the fact that Conroy’s first two trades as a GM are, by most people, considered on the lower end of returns. Conroy needs to have Toronto overpay. We need the discussion after this trade to be that Toronto played a steep price to get a quality defenceman.

I think this idea that seems to be popping up that the Leafs need to ‘pay up’ simply because their GM used to be our GM or because our own GM made a horrendous trade with the Leafs 30 years ago is nonsense.
Any team, whether it is the Leafs or not, should ‘pay up’. Tanev is a valuable asset the the cost to acquire should be commensurate with that value no matter who the acquiring team is. The best deal on the table should be the one the Flames go with. Trying to extract a premium from one team or another for historical reasons is childish, or Milbury, like behaviour
I suspect GM’s are smarter than this. The days of seeking revenge or GM’s trying to steal from one another is probably over. These guys have professional relationships to maintain with one another so if you want to run the risk of being the jackass in the room, you’ll probably get shut out.
Should the Flames avoid trading with the Sharks because the Sharks will surely be after us. We stole Kiprusoff 20 years ago and they’ve been just waiting to get us back, mark my words! Conroy better be careful! Don’t do it Craig! We definitely have to take the Jets to the woodshed because we traded Marc Savard to them 21 years ag when they were the Thrashers.i bet those people in Atlanta are still snickering at us. Josh Morrissey for Tanev and a 4th should do.
Conroy should trade Tanev, or any player for the best deal at the time they decide to make the trade. That’s it. Should t matter one iota if it’s the Rangers, the Leafs, the Stars, whoever….doesn’t matter. Conroy’s job is to make the Flames better not extract revenge on others for ‘reasons’.

If Flames can get Pred's first round pick out of the deal, Conroy will be the next wizard. I don't think he's anywhere near that. He's too nice of a guy with that huge smile right now. He's gotta work on that smile to his advantage rather than getting taken advantage.

Barrie is a pending UFA, NSH won't be in any hurry to give up a 1st to get him off the books

Agreed, why would the Predators give up a high pick for a pending UFA
They have a crap load of cap space, they really don't need to move him
They could always sit the player in the press box for the rest of the season.
Its the player/agent that could be interesting in a move.

Take Barrie and a mid round pick for eating his salary. If you can move him at the deadline for a late pick it is found money all around. Barrie fills a gap that the team needs. Hopefully you have Poirier able to play later in the season and learn some things from Barrie on how to run a PP and take on the responsibility next year. Young players need some vets around to learn from. Barrie working with Poirier could pay big dividends down line.

I wonder if LA might want to upgrade on Michael Anderson. I would love it if we could somehow trade Hanifin(with extension) + pick for Anderson. I think Hanifin is the better D right now, but Anderson is 2 years younger, and is signed to 7 more years at $4.1M.
Unfortunately, I realize it's just a pipe dream.

I think how trades will be perceived by a team’s fanbase absolutely has an influence on returns. Beyond the fans perception of a trade with the leafs, it sounds like the owner might be demanding a higher price from the leafs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/CalgaryFlames/s/vAnYtb2RwJ
And this kind of thinking would apply even more to trading with the oilers, for example. It would have to be a massive, massive overpay for the flames to ever consider trading a valuable piece to the oilers that could help them win.

Dear god, Nashville is not giving up an asset to move Barrie and it's not because Conroy wasn't mean enough on the phone. It's because it makes no sense and that type of trade doesn't exist.
They're in the exact same situation we are and have, wait for it, 30 million dollars in deadline cap space!

Bottom pairing defenseman on the Coyotes, possibly replacement level on a lot of teams. I am not sure I would prefer him any more or less over any of the bottom pairings we already have.

The Fourth Period (I know, I know) suggests that the Flames are one of five teams pursuing Sharks D Mario Ferraro. Ferraro is quite vanilla, but he can play in all situations and is a calm puck-mover, and can actually play defensively.

Who’s reporting this? iphone4lyfe???? Sounds legit. Internet chatter doesn’t hold much water.
If the oilers had the best deal on the table for Tanev, as an example, you’re suggesting the Flames take a lesser deal?
That’s pretty shortsighted. Again, Conroy’s job is to make the Flames better, not prevent the Oilers, or the Leafs, from getting better.
