Timmins + 2024 1st for Tanev at 50%. They can utilize their extra cap to make another deadline move later (if there is any). There isn't much interest to me from Toronto's end if the 1st isn't available, unless Minten/Cowan/Niemela is coming back. Doubt they move Knies.
One team I think might be in on Tanev would be the Stars. They could use a shutdown D.

Agreed. Simply because it’s Toronto and they are easily the most desperate team for defensemen right now… the return has to include their first round pick. I would rather accept another team’s offer of a a second round pick than accept a second round pick from Toronto.
And that is simply because of the metrics in Conroy trading with Treliving and the fact that Conroy’s first two trades as a GM are, by most people, considered on the lower end of returns. Conroy needs to have Toronto overpay. We need the discussion after this trade to be that Toronto played a steep price to get a quality defenceman.

I don't want Timmins, I would rather take a 3rd and Minten.

Would much rather have the 1st round pick myself. Minten seems like a checking centre. He has never really put up numbers in the WHL. 40th in PPG this year, 40th last year. Seems like a pretty middling prospect to me. Got a lot of hype out here in Toronto at training camp though.

I wouldn't be mad at that return, but at the same time I would rather have our scouts pick someone in 2024 in the top 32. They're generally pretty good at picking in that range.

I always figured early on it was probably a huge draw. Players could look how it was built with Crosby and probably assumed at some point management would figure it out and put together a solid roster and so getting on the oilers would either get you a huge payday, or maybe even a cup.
Players aren't stupid and neither are their agents, so I am sure that by now anyone that can't convince themselves they would be a mainstay with the conna realize that it's lowered second line minutes at best, and could be just the few minutes a night the bottom 6 play at worst. Also, if you aren't on PP1 you wont see any PP time and even the PK is now loaded up with conna. Basically, if you sign there you are taking the gamble of going into irrelevance, because your stat's might not support another contract with another team period. Add on the teams commitment to defense (100% committed to not play it) and spotty goaltending meaning a cup is a pipe dream, and the polish has clearly worn off the turd.

Yeah, look at who they've attracted. Kane (no one wanted him). Keith (on a sweetheart retirement deal). Jack Campbell (massive overpay). etc etc

I wonder if the Sabres would be interested in Markstrom. They have some real good pieces that are locked down longterm. They have some bad contracts coming off this year (Olaffson) and have a bad contract they could send back (Greenway). They must know that they have no real chance with their current goaltending, they are hurting Levi’s development by having him in the NHL too early.

Julien MacKenzie mentioned on Twitter that Chris Johnston and Shayna Goldman have connected Barrie to the Flames. I can see it considering the Flames are moving on from some D and need power play help. I assume he will be almost free if you can take the cap back. Pending ufa so at no cost might be worth it?

I personally don't have any interest in a defenceman that has no idea how to actually play defense

Barrie would be fine for the rest of the season. Maybe get the powerplay going. There would be no long-term commitment, so I don’t see the downside.

If Barrie could actually move the needle on the Flames powerplay I'd be all for it. I do however believe the Flames could do better in the trade market than Barrie.

God I hope this isn’t our plan for weaponizing our cap space.

No thanks to Barrie. Would rather struggle with our youthful D men once we get rid of our UFAs.

No interest in Barrie after Hanifin and Tanev are traded.
Use the rest of the season to audition younger players with future upside, whether it's Kuznetsov and Poirier or someone else young acquired in the Lindholm, Hanifin or Tanev trades.

Give me Barrie all day if he doesn't cost an asset.
Staple him on PP1 (but overall detriment to the team), build his value, and hopefully ship him back out for an upgraded asset at the deadline.
Only way I'd do it, but 100% on board in that case.

Do we get an asset to take on Barrie's cap after we deal Tanev + Hanifin at 50% retained?
If we get a 3rd to take him and we can deal him for a 4th at the deadline, I'm all for it!

I'd trade a 7th. That's it.
