He also missed significant time in the playoffs in 2022, and I believe it was reported that he was playing through injuries the year before. I remember the discussion of why was he dressing despite the Flames being out of the playoffs in game 56.
Google to the rescue:

If it's not cheap or if it's longer than a couple years - nah.

I'm not. Conroy should have retained on Zadorov to buy better picks in that case.

Tanev has not looked good this year (other then a select few times).
Time to move on from him.

You only have 3 retention spots per year…. You don’t waste that on the lowest contract that you may be moving in the coming months

If you are re-signing Tanev and failed to use one on Zadorov, then who are you using the 3 retention slots on?

you realize the Flames can retain on players not currently on their team right?

Why do that when you already have players on your own team to use them on?
Facilitating trades like that is a smart thing to do when you don't have your own rentals to trade away. We know Toronto had a better offer but Conroy didn't want to retain. That's fine if the other three are all traded.

Also, they can say they want to sign him to a one to two year deal and Tanev tells them to eff off and he wants to test free agency. Keep the retention slot for the most valuable assets

This team is at a .479 P% over a quarter of the way through this season.
We missed playoffs last season.
Why would we re-sign a 33 year old instead of trading him?
Not even .500 but won some games. Retool is off.
This is exactly what I was worried of..

I seriously doubt the Flames brass really wants to extend Tanev, but you put the notion out there so the POS GMs that are lowballing trade offers for him start putting forth better proposals.

Exactly, just like the players play the game on the ice, GMs play it off the ice. Even if Tanev was extended, it doesn't mean he can't be traded in the future. I also can't think of many rebuilding teams that didn't have a few good token veterans there to work with young players. You never want to go full Oilers.

Trade him and then see what his demands are in the summer.

Its pretty tough to say that he should have retained on Zadorov without knowing what the offer was to retain. My understanding is Conroy and Tre couldn't agree on that value of the deal.
Any contender that will be looking to trade for Tanev/Hannifin/Lindholm, is going to be looking to ship us bad contracts as they will need to be dollar in and dollar out and will also likely be looking for retention.
The cap flexibility we have by not retaining on Zadorov really helps us out in accommodating moving one of the other pieces, by being able to take cap back as well as possible retention. Cap is king these days and I would rather have a retention slot open to help move a more valuable asset or get an asset from another team just to help facilitate a trade.
Fans always want more, but he was a 4/5 d man that we acquired for a 3rd so consider we got a 3rd and a 5th(which will almost be a 4th round pick as Chicago likely picks top 5) plus a couple of serviceable years + cap flexibility. It was a good trade. Also consider that the player publicly requested a trade this was not a fleecing by the Canucks.

The 37th pick in the 4th round is really like a 5th round pick, as that is what it really is.

I'd see Arizona moving picks. They have a million of them.

And I would see Conroy hanging up. Just pics from a team with a great prospect base for Hanifin isn't happening.

I read somewhere that the Coyotes don't want to move this year's 1st. So what are they offering, a bunch of 2nds? No thanks. Get teams bidding against eachother and someone will overpay.
