I get so confused about cap retention, but if indeed you can only retain cap on 2 players per year, it makes sense to keep that in play for Lindholm and Hanifin. Those are the deals that will really matter.

In 10 years we have only retained once (Rittich).
I think it’s a Murray Edwards thing, I can’t fathom actually seeing all three slots used

I'm sure there's a word for this kind of mental process, but I don't believe ‘thinking’ is it.

Obviously nobody wants an old slow defenceman on an expensive and long contract. But wait, didn't you see the end to end rush with OT winner? Yes, and the only reason he made it into the Vegas zone was because of the no call interference play by Backlund. Did you also see the breakaway giveaway that Vladar bailed him out of?

Didn’t Zadorov have a huge giveaway in that game as well?
LOL.

1) Teams gearing up for a playoff run stockpile veterans, they don’t deal them away. I’m struggling to think of a sizeable contract moved at the deadline by the buyer.
2) If you look at the contending that are likely looking at Lindholm, Hanifin, and Tane, their rosters are chock full of NTC/NMCs. Hard to imagine a Coyle, Carlo, or Suter waiving to go a non-playoff Canadian team.

So where are these contracts that the Flames need to make space for? I’m struggling to find a likely candidate.

Arvidsson maybe?

Probably, let's face it the Flames D sucks overall. Zadorov still the best overall defenceman. Hate me but I only speak the truth.

It’s very fair to debate the merits of this trade. It’s painful some are debating that Big Z was anything close to our best D man.

This suggest that the Flames will have no one to trade with regardless of today's trade. How can having cap space be a bad thing? The Flames could be a facilitator of a trade between two other teams in the event that the Flames are on a particular player's NTC list.

The hat trick in the last game last season when the team was already eliminated lol that’s all that comes to mind

A result of rebuilding never being an option. But if they're finally serious about not building a team stupidly, they have much better contracts to spend those spots on.

Another beer, and now listening to Conroy’s interview on Flames talk.
Hearing Conroy say:
Quote:
To make a deal now in the NHL…to not retain any salary, to have 3 retention spots remaining is very valuable
|
As a Flames fan who wants the team to turn the page and build something new? That’s perfect. Make use of those 3 retention slots on the better players (Tanev, Hanifin, Lindholm).
Sounds like Conroy has a handle on things.

He was our 5th best defencemen.
But I also find it amusing when people are trying to pretend he wasn't a good skater or physical presence.
It's ok to admit what he did well and he was the best defencemen on the team in those 2 regards.
The return is underwhelming and he'll be a perfect fit for Vancouver, but I'll reserve judgement overall until we see what Conroy's big picture is with the cap space.

I find it pretty funny that for years there was almost no end to the criticism of how the Flames (Treliving) was waisting mid round picks on defensive depth (Fattenburg, Gustavson, Forbort). ‘tHesE PickS a4e valuBLe anD He’S jUSt WaisTinG THeM?!?’
now the Flames have done the opposite by trading a pending UFA depth Dman for two mid round picks and the same cohort is still finding ways to complain.
I’m sure if Conroy had a better offer, he would have taken it. Personally, I’m glad the move was made. Frees up some cap space which will only become more valuable as the season goes on. The big moves are yet to come and this helps set the table nicely for them. Waiting could have also complicated things down the road as well. The house cleaning has started.
Conroy deserves a passing grade on this one. It wasn’t a home run but odds were low it was going to be for Zadorov anyway.

I know Zadorov is a tire fire but he has some good things in his game. I thought he'd bring a better return. Oh well. next!

Remember when Burke refused to trade Cammalleri for less than fair value and it lead to consistently strong returns when we moved guys?
Well, this just feels like the exact opposite of that.
