Big Z is a stud. I'm sad to seem him go and at times this year was hopeful they'd sign him to an extension but it was not to be. A bit of a roller coaster on the ice. He is entertaining to watch and he comes across as an A+ person. I hope he does well in Vancouver and beyond, he deserves it.

Thank you Big Z! You were a good warrior!

The return does feel a little light but there's definitely more going on here than the draft capital. The extra cap space gives them lots more flexibility going forward. It also gives them an opportunity to give a player like Solovyov a longer look. Desimone got an extended look. Oesterle's getting another look. It seems obvious the team is looking to inject some puck movement to the back end of the roster and Solovyov isn't really that so moving Big Z opens up room for him.

Also removing a body that has actively said he doesn't want to be here has its merits too.

While it's certainly disappointing the return wasn't higher, such is life as a Flames fan. When the team wants to sell the market is soft and when they're in a position to buy, other teams are paying a premium. It is what it is. I can see the logic and reasoning for moving Big Z when they did, for what they did. The cap space will likely be a factor in the other UFA trades. The scouts have done a really good job at finding kids who can play later in the draft. This gives them a couple more shots at it and at the end of the day the only way any of this really turns around is for the team grab more picks and to continue drafting well.

I get the theory that the Flames will be able to take back contract at the deadline. And I want to believe it. But two problems:

1) Teams gearing up for a playoff run stockpile veterans, they don’t deal them away. I’m struggling to think of a sizeable contract moved at the deadline by the buyer.

2) If you look at the contending that are likely looking at Lindholm, Hanifin, and Tane, their rosters are chock full of NTC/NMCs. Hard to imagine a Coyle, Carlo, or Suter waiving to go a non-playoff Canadian team.

So where are these contracts that the Flames need to make space for? I’m struggling to find a likely candidate.

Better chance the Flames use the cap space to take on a bad contract in return than they retain IMO. Still can be used to help facilitate a better trade return.

Absolute agreement. The player had to be dealt and now the team has more flexibility salary wise if they pursue other deals.

Maybe there is a GM sitting out there saying I could have offered more and this tells that guy and the rest of the league not to hold their cards too tight because when it’s time to pull the trigger, this GM is decisive. I like the deal and if Zadorov might have garnered slightly more that lost asset is likely more than recovered in future deals where GMs know they have to reveal their intentions or they could be left with nothing.

Hoped the Flames coulda picked up a second, but with no salary retained this player isn’t worth that. This isnt the deal where you’d get a real return for retaining salary.

Conroy +1 on this deal.

Phaneuf_Phan has expressed these opinions so far in this thread:

• Zadorov is a tough guy
• Zadorov was the Flames' best defenceman
• Weegar is so bad that nobody would trade for him if he were available

I'm sure there's a word for this kind of mental process, but I don't believe ‘thinking’ is it.

Tell me about his last “big hit”.

Hanifin is a faster defenceman.

He's an adequate bottom pairing d-man who can be a "high event" player when the game calls for it.

On one hand lays big hits, or an offensive rush, on the other bad giveaways or bone headed plays.

He's a mixed bag and overall I liked him. Hard not to like a guy who calls a spade a spade including his comments about his country's leadership. But that's not to be mistaken with calling this guy a top four d-man. He's only that on a lottery team like he was in Chicago. The problem with that is that went to his head and he thinks that's what he is now and he expects to be paid and played as such going forward (according to his agent).

So far both of Conroy’s trades have had to be sold to me as good returns. I thought they could get a 2nd and maybe another late round pick 4-6th rounder. Getting a 3rd that is 3 drafts from now weakens the return for me even more.

It is funny the 2 pending UFA’s that came out and proclaimed they wanted to stay were the ones to request a trade but obviously is was because they were not getting the long term deals they wanted.

Meh trade because I hoped we would get more
