There's really no benefit to drinking. Not nutritionally, not socially (a person a few drinks in isn't nearly as charismatic as they believe, it makes them more talkative but also dulled and its usually obvious), and it certainly only hinders functionality.

If you take it out of your house and normalize not drinking, eventually you'll reach a point where you could take it or leave it if you were offered one, but it's no longer a crutch. And you'll miss it less than you thought you would.

Any one who is a grown professional with family would greatly benefit from dropping it from their lifestyle. Especially if you care about being optimal at anything you do or having longevity to spend with people you care about.

At least Perry acknowledges the issue and is taking action. Big step for sure.

I drink maybe 8-9 drinks a year, and there is a benefit: it feels good to be a bit tipsy. You don't need to always optimize your life like you're theorycrafting a video game to easily beat the end boss.

You got to have some fun in life. In theory you should only eat whole foods and not drink. Where is the fun in that lol

I'll ammend the statement - there's no benefit to drinking regularly where it's a part of your lifestyle.

At least not beyond your 20s when it's maybe not a bad thing to learn your limits and be a little reckless while your body can handle the abuse and the downside are limited without career and family at stake.

I also enjoy an occasional drink roughly the same amount/year as you. But that amount of consumption isn't enough to impact a person's life or functionality day to day.

Pffft. I can not trust a person who doesn't drink.

But I also can't trust a person who does.

80/20 is a good ratio. If you can make good choices 80% of the time you're probably setting yourself pretty well. Playing a little on the extremes is not necessarily bad and your body can handle it at that frequency.

Obviously that approach to life isn't for every one but I'm told by people later in their life suffering from chronic issues and out of shape that making good choices in those middle adulthood years is something they'd advocate and wished they'd done. We either can learn now or learn later the hard way I guess.

I'm sure Perry wishes he was in the practice of making better decisions so he didn't wind up on this situation near the end of a great career.

lol for me it depends on why they are a teetotaler. If it is for health reasons then there is still a decent chance I will get a long with them. If it is for religious reasons, there is like a 5% chance.

No kidding. You got the feeling in this thread that some posters were actually hoping family rumour to be true refusing to believe it wasn't a possibility even after the Hawks GM and many in the media squashed it. What a horrible thing to put the Bedard family through.

Of what I've witnessed of religious people that have substance restrictions, they'll break the rules not infrequently but tell people (and probably themselves) that they never do. If you see them enough they'll have these dissociative moments where they do the bad things and they'll never acknowledge it after the fact.

I guess that's between them and their god/s though.

I've found cold showers are a much better substitute than alcohol along with working out.

His lawyer wrote a statement a week later...after the consequences

had he gotten away with it he would be going along his merry way being rich NHLer and being an asshat to everyone
Need to see some action before he gets any credit from me (not that he is looking for it)

That's a bit much but to each their own. I could care less what people drink or eat as far as whether or not I'll enjoy their company or friendship.

So Perry's contract was terminated because he's an alcoholic?

How many more contracts are the Blackhawks going to be allowed to get out of?

At almost 62 years of age I wouldn’t advocate drugs, alcohol or violence for anyone, however it’s worked for me.

Perry would have been a good trade piece at the deadline, so I doubt they really wanted to terminate the deal. He was on pace for 46 points and had no term on the deal after this season. Some contender would have tried to add him if none of this happend.
