When was the last time a pure buyout contract of the value of Campbell’s was traded and the price was not a first round pick for each year left on the contract? If Markstrom is worthless (which I doubt he is) the cost of picking up Campbell is about 3 first round picks. Add to that whatever the cost of Markstrom is and you have the makings of what could potentially be a deal in my opinion.

I don’t believe any team has ever given up more than one first round pick to dump a contract.

1 first for Markstrom, 1 first to take Campbell, plus Holloway to round it out.

It isn’t enough to take that Campbell contract, add either Bourgault or Broberg

Broberg is awful. A fifth rounder would better.

Hold out for a fourth. We could use another franchise player.

Agree that he is not great considering his draft pedigree, but it’s Edmonton…. There is no place in the NHL that gives less forward support than Edmonton. Also he has played with some god awful partners in Edmonton. I think he could be salvaged to be a 4-5 dman.

It would be funny if this fantasy came to pass and Campbell get’s here only to have 4 Vezina calibre years.
That’s just as likely as a trade with EDM, so don’t laugh.

To be fair the wizard made a panick move from a position of weakness and got hosed
I'd take edmontons top 3 protected 1st for Campbell.

The Coyotes got two 2nd round picks for 2 yrs if Patrik Nemeth at 2.5 million a year and he was still a borderline 7th dman. Surely 3 and a half years of an ECHL backup at a cap hit of 5 million is worth more than one 1st round pick.

Wouldn't we want an unprotected pick?

To be fair but isn’t Ken Holland needing to make a panic move from a position of weakness with a good chance of getting hosed?

Interesting article on the Athletic about the best drafting teams since 2007. The first part was the bottom half of the league. 5 of the 7 Canadian teams were on the list and the 2 that were not are the Flames and Leafs. Oilers were 5th worst, Buffalo the worst.
Edmonton had 10 top 10 picks in that timeframe 4 more than any other team.
I am interested to see where the Flames rank. They are definitely getting a high ranking based on many of their late round picks panning out. Brodie, Gaudreau, Fox, Mangiapane all being closer to top of the lineup players. Kulak, Brossoit carved out decent careers. Tkachuk at 6 was like landing a top 3 pick.
Seeing the Flames as a top half of the league drafting group over a 15 year span should give us hope that the rebuild/retool has a good chance of succeeding. It’s likely a main reason they only picked top 10 3x post Iginla before they had a team that could make the playoffs.

You have to be in some serious tank mode to take Campbell for 4 years
Basically handicapped your team salary wise since he is a total loss

FOUR more than any other team. Four. More than twice as many as most teams.
And among them, they were gifted a generational talent, and hit a homerun with another one. EXCLUDING those two, they had more than any other team, including 3 1OAs. Think about that!
They shouldn't be good, they should be the 1970s Habs right now. They should be the biggest dynasty that the cap era has seen, and may ever see.
Instead, we have the Oilers.

It costs $3.8M to have him in the minors. If you can get 3 unprotected 1sts, from a team that is no good, that is a slam dunk that you have to do.
And in a couple years, you buy him out.

I wonder if the Oilers approached the Flames and offered them Bouchard for Markstrom would the Flames be tempted?
I think Bouchard is having a terrible year so far, but he has a ton of potential IMO. Markstrom has been our best player this year, and he's exactly what the Oilers need.

Throw in Holloway, then start the conversation from there
Personally, not a fan of Bouchard - clueless and careless, defensively. But we could use a big shot on the point.
