Can the people who think Markstrom has value on the trade market cite a recent example of a goalie trade that they feel is comparable?

"value" is pretty vague. He is worth something, do you not agree?

Marc-Andre Fleury was traded to the Minnesota Wild by the Chicago Blackhawks for a conditional first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Kind of comparable?

Everyone. E=NG. Don't want their players. Don't want to help them. There are other options.

Ryan Miller? Not so recent and less term I guess.

It checks out. It's somewhere between Berra for a 2nd, and Schneider for 9th overall.

There is no package Edmonton could put together that would make me think trading them Markstrom is a good idea. None. Ever. Offer us their next ten 1st round picks and I wouldn’t do it.

The condition was unlikely to be met, and wasn't, so it was really a second round pick.

Why, that would hurt the Oilers and help the Flames.

I’ve never been as sold on Holloway as others have. He’s still young and he could turn into a solid NHLer if he got out of Edmonton. But even when he was playing for team Canada at the world juniors a few years ago I never understood all the praise he got from the media. He was not putting up points at the tournament or dominating play. He played ahead of Zary in the line up and, even in limited minutes, Zary was producing more scoring opportunities when he was on the ice. It was obvious at the time that Holloway’s offensive skills were lacking compared to other top picks from that draft. I understand that he was drafted as a two-way center but I think he tops out as a 3rd line center at best in the NHL.

Not saying there isn’t value in guys like that… but I think him being I included in a deal does not tip the scales very much. Obviously, he’s really all the oilers have in terms of young talent so he would likely be included in any deal they could make. But it’s their first round picks that I would target more than any young player they already have in their organization.

He’s worth something if equal contract is coming back. But goalies in general do not get much back in the trade market, especially if they have term.

I’m just looking for a real-world comparable. Because the expectations of returns in this thread seem unrealistic.

A rare example of a goalie who got a good return* without salary coming back. But he was younger, on a more digestible contract, and had a stronger track record in recent seasons than Markstrom has in Calgary.

Kuemper

Age 31 when traded.

One year left at $4.5 mil.

Pct in previous three seasons: 0.925, 0.928, 0.907

Markstrom

Age 33

2 years left after this season at 6 mil

Pct in previous three seasons: 0.922, 0.822, 0.903.

* 1st round pick (#32 OA), prospect trending down in value (Timmins), conditional 3rd.

If Edmonton wants Markstrom then the price has to be extremely high. IMO the Flames should be asking for the following:
Halloway
Bourgault
3 1st round picks
Campbell

Is the request unrealistic, yes, but if you want the goalie of your biggest rival because you believe he can help your team win with your two elite superstars, that is what the cost is.

I would definitely do their next 10 first round picks.
