Is Zadorov an upgrade on Brodie now?
That’s pretty bad

Nah, Klingberg is beyond bad. Brodie I can get behind being a positive but moving him out for another dman doesn't really make sense.

Brodie is 33, has 2 points. He's still OK defensively, but yes. Zadorov is an upgrade.

Zadorov makes too many dumb mistakes
If he is an upgrade then Brodie is pretty bad now
The only thing Zadorov have is size of that matters

Dallas has drafted very well. I don’t think there is an Iginla but some of them are very good

Conroy is in no position to bluff.

Which is still better than overpaying and signing them to long term contracts.
Best outcome: trade UFA's for young players and/or picks
An outcome: Letting the UFA's walk to free agency for nothing but you get cap space moving forward.
Worst outcome: signing any of the UFA's to long term over market deals, which Calgary has to do to retain any of them.

It sounds like Klingberg is going to be done health wise, so acquiring him would mean you likely wouldn't be able to flip him for more picks. It would just be helping the Leafs out.

Stars - They aren't moving Johnson for anything we'd be trading guys. Christian Kyrou could be a move. Mavrik Bourque is a somewhat recent first. Stankoven looks like a clear target...not sure they'd move him.
Coyotes - I'll dream of Guenther...but the Coyotes are loaded with picks for the next few years. So...picks?
Toronto - I have zero interest in any of their prospects. From a fan perspective, it's impossible to get any read on the actual quality of their prospects. I don't want any of their players from any level. Just picks.
I don't think he mentioned the Devils, but they have some prospects I'd dream of (Holtz!). Also...if Columbus is looking at a major shake up, I'd love to see Denton Mateychuk become a Flame.

Cliff's suggestion of Bischel from Dallas is a great one. Brock Faber-ish target (from the Kings/Wild deal)

The Hurricanes released Halak from his PTO today. It will be interesting to see if the Oilers give him a look.
The Canes could be a potential trading partner for Vladar or Markstrom. So far, Raanta has been playing well for them but he will celebrate his 35th birthday before the playoffs start, so that's certainly a risk for them.
Kochetkov has not been doing well, with a 1-4 record this season. Overall, they have only lost 7 games this season, so he has more than half their losses and only 10% of their wins.
Right now, Carolina is 1 point behind Philly for 2nd in the Metro, but they're also only 1 point ahead of Detroit in the Wild Card race. They are definitely a team I could see trying to make a move to improve their goaltending sooner rather than later.

Carolina is a great landing spot for Vladar.

Carolina does look like a good fit for a goalie trade. Could probably get a 3rd round pick for Vladar at the moment. Could maybe even be a conditional 2nd/3rd round pick… conditions being if he plays a certain number of games and/or if the hurricanes make it to the conference final.

If healthy

The big problem with Vladar is how terrible he has played this season, and last year for that matter. Plus he's signed for next year as well, which is likely a deterrent for most teams.

If Ryan Suzuki is blocked at the NHL level for the next few years, I'd do him for Vladar straight up.

As much as I love Kadri, I would rather we have a contrat that expires in 2 seasons after this one. Kadri and Zadorov (50%) for Romanov and Pageau?
Stars: Since Johnston isn't on the table, I'd ask for Harley, (Hanifin replacement), Bourque, or Stankoven. Mainly Stankoven.
Coyotes: Aim high and try for Guenther or Geekie. If not one of those, then a handful of those 2nd round picks would be nice. We have great scouts.
Toronto: I feel the same way. Unless it's Knies I don't want any prospects. Just give us picks and a player to flip in a three way trade or something. Don't really have appealing assets, so Treliving would need to offer a good bit to be a suitor. Tanev for Klingberg + 1st would be A okay with me.
|
Knies, Guenther, Stankoven, all of these players are gold in a cap world. I could see them moving for a cost-controlled top player on a good to great contract, but not for a pending UFA (re-signed as part of deal or not).
Moving Lindholm 2 years ago, you have every shot to get a can't-miss NHL prospect. Now? A pending UFA that will cost you $8M+ at term to retain? Not so much.
I think we can expect first-round picks and/or prospects in return. But I think we need to manage our expectations that these blue-chippers are a) available, and b) would be part of any deal.

Just seems like a lot of folks are having pretty much 0 patience for our GM to figure out the right moves and make sure he sets the team up for success. Sometimes the environment dictates a little bit of the "how" someone executes a strategy. Declaring we need to wait until after Xmas, isn't necessary all driven by the GM wanting to see more for himself. It also might be dictated by the quality of the offers. I'm sure Conroy has a desired return (and a lowest acceptable offer) for these assets. Why wouldn't he wait until he gets his price? The team started slow, the assets we are moving didn't exactly help their value in the first few weeks, and it made the team look desperate. If the team keeps playing a little better - we look less desperate and the assets look better, the offers will likely get better.
Just not sure why people get so upset that our GM hasn't pulled the trigger on deals in what would seemingly be the part of the season where he'd get the worse return.
|
Conroy not responding to trade requests is huge. Let's the agents know they are not dictating the direction of the organization. Backlund having a talk with the players about it also confirms the Flames not giving control to the players, they get paid to play.
Conroy's patience creates more internal bidding as teams now don't know who has the edge to aquire available players. Waiting until after Christmas might just mean driving up the returns as other teams start to become impatient. I imagine the price for 2 defenseman going to Toronto will be high as Treliving will be pressed to give out a first to live up to his past dealings. Doubt Toronto is getting anything unless they are ready to pay a premium.
