Also funny to think what the oilers can/will do if they end up as sellers at the trade deadline this year. The only pieces I would say that they have of any value are McDavid and Draisaitl. Everyone else is paid too much and teams know any production numbers they have is due to playing with McDavid/Draisaitl.

However, we could honestly be 1-2 months away from a Draisaitl trade request. He hates dealing with the Canadian sports media… 1-2 more months of answering to them while losing this badly and I think he will be done. Don’t know what that trade for the oilers would look like. It likely has to be done in the offseason because the oilers only hope for keeping McDavid after trading Draisaitl is if they bring in high quality, NHL-ready players that can help carry the load. No playoff team is looking to offload guys like that during the season.

Waiting could also be a mistake though too… McDavid and Draisaitl are not looking as good this year. May hurt the return if Draisaitl posts a sub-point per game season… which he likely will if they put McDavid on LTIR once their season becomes a wash in January.

Tiny violin working overtime:

Pressure mounting for Oilers’ McDavid, Draisaitl as dynamic duo slumps
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...ic-duo-slumps/

Quote:
Neither guy can lean on the other to get out of the glue, because they’re both knee-deep in it.

“We were saying that the other day,” said Draisaitl. “This has never happened, that both of us have felt this way.

“It’s a bad time.”

Also from Spector in that article:

“But both play hurt, as proper leaders should. “

Friedman on the 32T pod the fact the Oilers are losing and a lot of goalies have NTC it makes it that much harder to make the deal.

This is just a personal opinion/speculation, but what goaltender would want to go there? Campbell was a decent goalie, had no help, strings some losses and has some rough games, and they make him the scapegoat and drop him off of the face of the earth (Bakersfield) and claim he's the problem. What goalie wants to go into that city with that kind of pressure?

And this isn't just Campbell, this has been a problem for YEARS. I don't even want to take the time to label out all of the goalies that have been on that garbage roster and played terribly there because of terrible defense. It's no secret almost all goalies that go from Edmonton to another team play some of their best hockey when they leave the gong show up north.

So, can't say I am "shocked" at all when a goalie utilizes their NTC to not go there.

When Toronto opted for a broken Matt Murray thats how you knew. The hype machine did their job and Edmonton bit.

They've played 3 more games...but it really does show how tough it can be to move up the standings in the NHL.

Before their loss on Saturday the Oilers had won 3 straight...and still are now in 30th in points percentage.

Yeah, even in that win streak, they aren't playing well and were fortunate it made it to 3. They still can't play defense and things could get interesting after this road swing. That points percentage is really starting to get up there as to what it will take to make it to 90 points. I think the only glimmer of hope for the Oiler brass and their media is that the teams in the WC spots aren't exactly lighting the world on fire with their current pace.

At 103rd in scoring and on Page 3 of the NHL’s scoring race, Connor McDavid is in the biggest slump of his NHL career. His shooting percentage has plummeted from 18.2 per cent last season to 9.1 per cent this.

He is fifth in scoring, on his own team.

A few stalls over in the visiting dressing room here in Sunrise, Leon Draisaitl sits with six goals. He’s missed more open net one-timers than that this season, and his overall game seems lost at sea as the Oilers languish near the bottom of the NHL standings.

His shooting percentage fell from 21.1 per cent to 11.5 per cent, and that doesn’t count the empty net chances that have sailed wide.

Oh, and then there’s this:

Neither guy can lean on the other to get out of the glue, because they’re both knee-deep in it.

“We were saying that the other day,” said Draisaitl. “This has never happened, that both of us have felt this way.

“It’s a bad time.”

I don't know what Spector is talking about. Their problems are goaltending and coaching. They fired their coach and relegated their starting goalie to the AHL.

Problems have been addressed.

It is actually a pretty remarkable feat the Oilers could accomplish.

A lot of teams bottom out when they lose top players to injury or something.

All their top players are playing lol.

after "rebuilding" for over a decade...4 first overalls, countless top 10 picks
the Oilers are 30th in the league

Its remarkable really...the worst managed team in sports history and its not even an exaggeration. Their cap is WORSE next season and after that its armageddon.

Never again do I want to hear "Flames are no better we can't make fun of them" consider the circumstance...Flames are MUCH better

Once McDavid asks for a trade and Leon leaves for the bright lights of New York or LA, its going to be hilarious when they have to ride 40 point Nugget Hopkins as the top line C.

Has Pickard even been given a start yet?

Guys like Spector and Staples yap & wine about goaltending. What they expect, and what the Oilers need, is for goaltenders to STEAL games, not just win games. Goaltending to cover up for any and all defensive miscues.

This season Oiler goaltending has not won them games, but it also hasn't lost them games either. Their save % isn't great, but it kind of lines up with their defensive acumen.

I suspect the plan is to to let Pickard sit on the bench for a couple weeks or more, and then put him in against a top opponent. This way when their cold AHL goalie gets shelled, they can scapegoat him and let the rest of the team off the hook.

It is the Oiler way.
