Huberdeau is a bigger, lankier player who never had the shifty moves or speed. He just had some kind of on-ice understanding of the game that seemed to work with the linemates at the time but is something that can pass you as you get older and the game evolves.
Gaudreau still outskills him every time and that is something that stays longer as the player ages.

It kind of reminds me of Monahan, when the always-reliable 30 goal Money-hands suddenly became garbage. We couldn't figure it out, we were perplexed that he basically became a 4th liner and the play would die on his stick all the time.
It really only sank in when he finally asked to be put on LTIR for built up injuries.

We're talking 25% retained minimum ($7.875 AAV till the contract ends) and possibly more.

I’d still do it.
Johnny’s ours. When Feaster drafted him in the 4th round, he was listed at 139 lbs.
And all he did was become the face of the franchise. He made the team fun to follow after Iggy. He always did creative, interesting things on the ice.
He got caught up in the moment of July 1, and becoming a Flyer, but if he could do it over again, he’d stay here.
Bring him home.

Let’s say the Flames get an extra 1st from Hanifin or Lindholm trades. If Columbus offer Gaudreau for Huberdeau+1st (one of the late ones) do you make that trade?

I think Johnny Hockey is semi retired. Not sure I’d want him back at this point.

are we sure Huberdeau isn't semi-retired? And he has two more years on his contract as well.
To me that's as simple as it is. Two fewer years remaining on the contract, and the emotional attachment from prior seasons.

Always struck me as a family person, seeing the beach house walk throughs and all the family activities he talked about.
He probably is content putting his attention on raising a family and doing hockey just as a means for providing a comfortable lifestyle for his kin.
Nothing wrong with that, but now that he's stranded on a poor team long term I don't think he's focused on accolades or glory any more. He doesn't have a jersey in the rafters or franchise titles on the horizon as incentives any more either.

2 more years of term on a bigger contract.
Johnny has 80pts in 96 games in Columbus
Huberdeau has 62pts in 94 games in Calgary
One for one sounds great but in reality why would the Jackets entertain it? The Flames would love nothing more than Huberdeau to all of a sudden become good again but in reality I am sure they would love to rid themselves of that deal.

Because both players are underperforming their contracts and maybe a swap would bring both back up to their expected totals? Also, Columbus have more speedy/creative players that Huberdeau could potentially work with. They already know Gaudreau isn't working out there, just as we already know Huberdeau isn't working out here.

Johnny also has a NMC. why would he waive to come back to a team in a fire sale?

The Jackets are taking on $21M more and 2 extra years for a player who has been worse over a longer sample size. Maybe a late 1st is too rich but this team paid a 1st to dump 1 year and $6.375M of Monahan. Maybe if they had the same term left the Flames could retain the difference and it makes sense but with 2 more years of term for guys who are the same age I think a significant sweetener would need to be added

To pursue his legacy of being one of the best flames to out the jersey on? Ultimately to get a do over for a move he has rumored to regret?
Ultimately we still do not know the Flames plan but a roster reset is not confirmed to be a tear it down to the studs rebuild.

I don't think he really chose Columbus. I think the handling of that free agency ticket was a massive blunder by him and his agent. They miscalculated and ended up landing somewhere that was never intended but still got him a reasonable pay day. From what I recall, Columbus wasn't even a suitor -- they called the team.
I bet CBJ wasn't on his list at all heading into free agency.

His uncle on twitter implied that he is more than willing to come back to Calgary if possible.
Even if the Flames are "retooling", Columbus still isn't much better. The Flames have the 7th worst point percentage. Columbus has the 4th worse point percentage. If anything, the Flames are mediocre, and the Blue Jackets are bad.
