Well, the last season especially, but even the one before, him and Tkachuk were two peas in a pod. Watch some of their one touch passing and set plays and just reading and feeding off each other, it was incredible chemistry.
Lindholm is skilled enough to keep up and benefitted from that too, but it was NT and JG on a different level, together those last two years here.
JG then has his NJ or PHi dreams dashed by a misguided and misguiding agent. The family had basically committed to going out east with a pending child the the nervous mother feeling she needed to be close to family for that, and that meant any last minute changes of mind to stay were out of the question, and the scramble to find an easy and nearby team.
Then the pressure to perform in CLB with no supporting cast or structure as he had in Calgary last year. The promise was made probably to him to tighten things up with a stricter coach as JG liked Sutter, but then the Babcock thing blew up as now he's once again floating in the abyss of a talented player who doesn't have a sidekick (SM and the MT here) and proper direction from a coaching staff.

We need to manifest this thing!
Johnny misses the flaming C. He's doing his part to force the jackets' hand.

It would be nice if huberdeau could have a single good game to at least showcase himself for Columbus.

It would also be nice for Gaudreau to show he's worth trading for as well it works both ways.

Yeah it's suck for suck at this point. From the BJ's perspective, they have to take on two more years and another $1MM per. It would be kind of dumb for them to do that without some kind of inducement.

Both players are so bad and underperforming their contract so much... this makes sense like a Neal for Lucic type trade.
The question is if you wait for the off-season or just do it now.

Maybe the Flames use part of one of the returns from their UFA trades to put towards a gauberdeau trade as sweetener

Or a name that starts with B-O-U (Bourque, Bouma, Bouwmeester).
Obviously, time for a coaching change... Bruce Boudreau.

The longer Gaudreau continues to play this horrible the more realistic I feel this can actually become.
Still around a 1% chance i'd say but when this thread was made i would've said 1 in a million.

Even a rebuilding retooling Calgary?
I guess if he chose Columbus of his own free will he can't care that much about the competitiveness of the team

Let’s say for a moment both players would accept the trade… I don’t know what the cost would be. Calgary would for sure have to add/retain salary. But I’m not sure how much it would have to be in either case. Too much and it’s definitely not worth it.
To Calgary:
Gaudreau
To Columbus:
Huberdeau ($2 million AAV retained)
2nd round pick
Who says no?
The $2 million retained on Huberdeau’s contract saves Columbus a net $1.25 million in annual salary cap in the trade. Calgary basically gets Gaudreau for a cap hit of $11.75 million.
That seems like the flames are getting the worse part of the deal but the bigger problem for Columbus in this trade is that Huberdeau’s contract is 2 years longer than Gaudreau’s. That’s two extra years of an $8.5 million cap hit for the blue jackets if they took Huberdeau. That’s why I included the 2nd round pick. But I doubt that would be enough to entice the blue jackets… they would likely require a 1st round pick which would be out of the question for the flames at this point.
Honestly, I can’t see it ever happening. I think Gaudreau would do better here than Huberdeau but there would also be more pressure on Gaudreau than ever before because many fans would blame him for this whole collapse. Redeeming himself with the fans would be a tall order.

The biggest problem here is with Gaudreau off the books (in your post) Huberdeau is still on for 2 years at 8.5 (on your post while Gaudreau is off) if that isnt eaten i see no way CBJ takes this and ontop of that i think they need to take Huberdeau at more retained to make up for it. We're talking 25% retained minimum ($7.875 AAV till the contract ends) and possibly more.
