If they are going to do the shot clock thing, I can't see too many games even making it to a shootout. Might as well just do 3-on-3 until someone wins. If they make it so one team can't hog possession for long, I can't see the OT lasting longer than 10 minutes. Even 5 minutes would be a stretch.
Baseball - bigger bases, pitch clock, restrictions on shifts, and worse of all DH in the NL.

Exactly.

The entire reason that regular season OT and shoot outs exist, is because fans abhorred tie games.

Back to the future is not a solution.

I think change of possession if you go over and back of the red line is a great way to keep things going.

If not, change it to the blue line but that might be to drastic.

Nah - only Yanks hated ties. Canadians had long since adapted.

I used to play Speed Chess like this. Both players start with 5 min each. Every time you win a game, you lose a minute. Sharpens the wits quickly.

I'd like to see bludgers introduced during OT's.

Lol! I dont know why I found this so funny.

Like...has the size of the bases been up for discussion?

Lets do it. Lets have special nets for OT in the NHL. Double the size of the nets and double the size of the pucks.

Add Bears.

Lets get this show on the road.

They made the bases 3" (20%) bigger for the 2023 season: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules/base-sizes

Are these hungry bears, or do they get a pregame meal like the other players?

Better plan.

No regroup two-line pass & once again use the redline for something more than icing.

Or maybe just making the blueline & redline a literal line, not a border.

Thanks, I had no idea it's a thing with MLB as well.

If it's a normal thing, I can't complain that much I guess.

They are a line!

Too many French people.

In 3-on-3 the Blueline and Redline are like the Maginot line...useless.

The shootout generates views on social media and I doubt it's going anywhere

The players (mostly) hate it.
The serious fans (mostly) hate it.
Casual (mostly) American fans hate ties.

The NHL loves the shootout.

Tells you all you need to know.

Plenty of Canadians hated ties and I can guarantee later generations of fans that didn't grow up with ties would absolutely despise them. Ties are the absolute worst way to end any sports competition. The reality is that the NHL would never go back anyway so it's kind of moot discussing ties.

I do agree with your conclusion, if not your reasoning.

Bigger bases made for more stealing , as there was less space between bases.

It had the desired effect.

Re: "No re-grouping"

If players are limited to half ice once they cross, expect them to just play perimeter keep-away for an extended (and boring) period.

IMO, they're overthinking it and I don't believe any drastic change is necessary. Just keep the current format, but extend the 3v3 to 10 mins. This isn't my absolute ideal scenario (I hate 3 point games), but just what I think is most realistic, as well as what would improve OT (total # of shootouts in an entire season would be single digit).
