They actually have quite different skillsets, aside from being big guys. Gud is tough, plays good positional D, can fight and clears well. Z is a better skater and open ice hitter and is better offensively, but more prone to mistakes and getting beaten up.

Yeah we're on the same page. I would rather have Z right now as well. I didn't think he show cased his skating and offensive skills as much that year. I'm pretty sure Gudbranson had more goals and they both had similar point totals. Z also used to take a lot more penalties that year.
That's why I could see why a team took a flyer on Gudbranson that year for more money.

Yes, Zadorov had 5 more points and 2 fewer goals (in 4 fewer games). Z had about 11 more pms (which is probably quite a few more minors given Gud fought more).

So the Leafs want Zadorov AND Tanev for Brodie++? That would require 50% retention on both of the D we're sending them and taking on Brodie, who although is playing fine and certainly not bad for 5m, he still has a 5m cap hit for the next season. With that being said, 2 retention slots in one deal and taking on 5m for an extra year warrants a top prospect and a 1st, no? Otherwise, Calgary should look elsewhere by trading Tanev and Zadorov separately.
FWIW I would love Brodie back. He was my favorite defenseman when he was here. Toronto would absolutely feel his absense if he is the odd man out. They should be doing everything they can to move Klingberg, not Brodie.

I actually wouldn't mind having a guy like Brodie or Tanev around for a rebuild as a 4/5D, so he can help a young guy adjust to the league.
That said, I really doubt both Z and Tanev will be going to the leafs, or the same team in general.
I guess a case can be made that Brodie can be flipped as a rental as well, but we have to figure out where to trade both Hanifin and Lindholm first.

Is there any thought of what the asset(s) would be we'd be getting from Toronto in this currently hypothetical trade that we'd actually want?

I don't know how much this needs to be said but the LEAFS are the desperate team here...not the Flames

Tre would never act out of desperation and make a bad deal. Nope. Never

Yeah we can disregard past trades with Toronto all we want but if they keep looking like what's been proposed there's a reason we all get antsy when their name comes up.

Plus, since you're only allowed to retain on a max of three contracts at a time, it would prevent us from being able to retain on either Lindholm or Fin, or whoever else we might have in mind as a 4th retainer.

Klingberg + 1st + x is a sensible framework for a Zadorov trade though, IMO. Unless Klingberg has us on his NTC, which is entirely possible.

HoW do you eVeN know who is on and not on Klingberg's no trade list? And you can't even do quotes! Come at me!!!
Am i doing this right?

From what I read online a collection of 24-27 year old Marlies and a 3rd-5th round pick and one of Brodie or Klingberg and the Flames eat 50% for both Z and Tanev
I don’t think there has been a single insider that has mentioned what the Leafs would offer.

The Flames didn’t want to let Treliving go for other jobs. They then made Treliving leave the draft floor until they made their pick in the first round. There is a lot of spite there and I can’t see the owners lining up to do a favor to Treliving and help him make the team he inherited better unless it is a significantly better offer than whatever any other team is tabling?

If it's the best offer, you take it. Gotta maximize the return ... looking the other way because of spite is a terrible idea.

The flames need to take the best offer but it better be the unanimous best offer. If the Devils, Leafs, and Canucks all have a 2nd on the table then big Z is a Devil
