We always go with the line of thinking that the Oilers are just “nepotism embodied” by choice. That they purposely seek out guys who have some connection to the Oilers or McDavid or whatever.
Personally, I think it’s more likely that they can’t actually get anyone else. Look at all the half-decent careers and reputations that have been irreparably damaged by being involved with the Oilers. They just made a ho-hum AHL coach who couldn’t hack it as an NHL assistant their head coach, and made a used-car salesman with virtually no coaching experience (outside a little stint on the Junior A team he owns and a stint in AAA where he got suspended for using a discriminatory slur) their assistant coach.
Do actual professionals worth anything even want to come anywhere near that organization at this point? I highly doubt it.

While I sure don't think that replacing Woodpecker with Knoblauch is any sort of upgrade at all, I also don't believe that The Beav was anything more than a probably very average NHL coach.

I think it doesn't matter what kind of coach you are. We've seen guys who are bonafide, top-end NHL coaches who have managed to go to teams, build systems and cultures that are still in those organizations today, after close to a decade or more.
The players don't want it. They don't want structure. They don't want accountability. They want to skate out there score some goals and back check if they feel like it.
NHL's changed their video link format. We may have to update the embedder.
Interesting. My read on it is that he went out of the way to make sure the public knew this wasn't his call. His first answer didn't even really respond to the question - he just needed to get that out there immediately.
Smells funky to me that he didn't know. I bet he did. And now he's worried about his reputation.

Of course Staples would find a way to convince himself to slurp this up. If they put Katz's pube-haired son in charge he would convince himself of the brilliance and "gusto" behind that move too.
~2 years left in their window and they're putting it in the hands of a juniors guy who topped out as an NHL assistant briefly, and appears to have no concrete plan and is looks like he's still pinching himself that he's even behind and NHL bench.

Wouldn’t want to develop a reputation as a coach killer just as you’re gearing up for free agency, regardless of whether you’re one of the best in the world or not.

Of course he did....its absurd that the media sycophants up North are suggesting anything different.
Particularly when its a guy that coached him previously....like why wouldnt you consult the face of your franchise and highest paid player if you were considering a guy that actually knows and spent time with him?
That team is nothing short of a circus at this point, its truly amazing.

Only answer is if you're so stupid you think you know what he wants eithout asking. "Hey, let's surprise him with his old minor league coach!".
Oilers fire head coach Jay Woodcroft. Kris Knoblauch new head coach

Staples is basically admitting that they must have discussed it with McDavid. Plus, it's great that other members of the club are denying it in order to shield him!
