What's going on with Montreal? They're in the thick of the rebuild, with some holes on D. Could they be a viable trade partner for one of our dmen (or Huberdeau)? They've been totally silent when it comes to rumours the past couple seasons, it seems.

So if the oilers are finished off by American Thanksgiving, any team in the west looking to get goaltending doesn’t really need to worry about Markstrom’s troubles with the oilers.

Francouz only has a $2 million cap hit, so his LTIR doesn't create much space for them. Maybe Vladar is a better fit.
Or perhaps a bigger deal to balance the cap hits: Markstrom and Zadorov ($9.75M total) for one of their AHL goalies and Makar ($9.775M total).

Of course, it has to happen now to make sense.

Very few players are difference-makers in the NHL until draft+2. Even if the Flames hit the jackpot in the upcoming draft- say a Stutlze at #3 OA - that’s one player, who if we’re fortunate, will a difference-maker in the 2025-26 season
Tkachuk is D+5
Stutlze D+3
Sanderson D+3
Three home run picks over the span of three drafts. To go along with Chabot, Chychrun, Giroux, Batherson, and Norris. And they’re still not a playoff team.
Two year rebuilds aren’t a thing.

Fully agreed. You need a hit on multiple points which makes it hard, but ultimately you help your odds by drafting high for a few years. Toronto hit many home runs with Matthews, Nylander, Marner, but they also did well with their college signings and guys who seemingly came out of nowhere when drafted or developed after trading (like Hyman or Campbell). Ownership has to make a commitment to pour money into development and scouting while missing the playoff revenue for a few years, in order to build a team with hope and sustainability. It really is a 3 year project to get the young assets, then build promise by showing growth in developing that talent through wins. It's a commitment though.

Flames might have elite goaltending though sooner rather than later

I do believe if this team is ready to sell off the UFA's that Markstrom is 100% fair game despite how well hes played. Makar will not be part of the package clearly but hopefully once the new arenas built we have space to sign him.

I'd even say because of how well he's played. He's making himself tradable. Only trouble is that pesky NMC.

Markstrom is still only at 89.6% this year. Only a tad higher than the 89.2% from last year. He's 31st in goals saved above expected per 60 among goalies who have played 3 or more games.
He turns 34 in January and still has 3 years left on his deal with a 6 mill cap hit and a full NMC.
I'm still pretty skeptical that he's that easy to move. Mostly because of the remaining term.
