All I want is the Flames to make choices with three years from now in mind. This team needs a long term plan.

Again, I'm not arguing the rationality of it. I do know that Edwards loves cash flow, and I don't believe selling is in his plans. I think attendance and other revenue is important to him, moreso than franchise value. I don't think Edwards thinks this team is a winner with a few tweaks - he may have last year though. I think he doesn't want a losing team.

You can still entertain the fans with a crappy team.

They can completely succumb to Huberdeau and play all offence hockey with young talented kids. Scrap the defensive system and tying to win tight games.

Get a bunch of goons on the team and have them fight regularly.

Lower the price of beer at the games.

Fans will come watch the Flames lose 6-5 if it’s entertaining and there are lots of fights and physical play; this is what sells to Calgary hockey fans, even more so than offence.

Once you’ve accumulated a good young core, then you bring in a real coach and system to play winning hockey.

We’ll see. I think we are at the post Iggy era and Edwards has thrown in the towel. There isn’t much hope to save this team outside of drafting.

My hope is he can turn some of these trades into one for one deals for younger prospects ready to break into the league rather then a bunch of random picks in the next couple of drafts.

Lol

We can agree that this isn't how you build a team.

We need to draft and develop and we won't find elite talent any way else. Unless you want to overpay 30 year old UFA on their last legs but at that point they aren't elite.

We have drafted well I'd take my chances with our amateur scouts over our pro scouts and it's not even close.

Give the kids the reins. In a couple years it will all pay off.
Agreed but hope that they become a cap team because they take on some other teams' so-so-to-bad contracts while extracting picks or young assets. Ideally, those contracts they take on are expiring in a year and/or could be traded to contenders at the following TDL for even more assets. Not that they have to start the year as a cap team but they weaponize cap space in various ways.

I don't think they've ever had a concrete one beyond the what was required for the upcoming year. They've operated on the assumption that whatever team they ice, it has a chance to get in, and thus a chance to win the prize. It's always been about patching the ship in whatever way they can to roll the dice again the next year. Hence the rollercoaster clown ride full of unexpected turns.

I wish that just once they'd look 3-5 years in the future and plan for building up a roster that can't MISS the playoffs, and is actually a good bet to make noise on a consistent basis.

The year to year, just be good enough mentality is ####ing killer because when it backfires like it is now, it's demoralizing on multiple levels because there isn't that hope of building towards anything greater. Just tweaking the edges of a deeply flawed group that's depreciating over time.

Or a young guy that’s been in the league for a few years, with a nice upward trajectory….

The Flames need to walk away from the long term Lindholm, Hanifin or Zadorov nonsense. These guys have value, and they're not part of a winning team/culture.

Trade them for a haul of prospects and picks that you can produce a winning culture with the likes of Wolf, Coronato, Pelletier, Zary, Honzek etc.. Huberdeau and Kadri can earn their anchors with leadership if not with play.

Huberdeau was already given the A for leadership. Earned, not so much…

You’re not going to get an elite player in any of those deals. So who’s the core in a year two?

It's not like the current core is accomplishing anything. Acquire some young talent that can grow into it, maybe.

One of the side effects of a sell-off should be a couple of solid picks in the next 2 drafts who can step into the NHL right away.

If you think Hanifin and Lindholm are uninspiring now, wait till you see extended Hanifin and Lindholm!

Even if their intention is to compete now, they have to walk away. These guys are detrimental and in contract years! Thank goodness they have some perceived value to other gms.
