Most people would define greatness by your victories and in sports, championships. In McDavids case I guess it just means you can skate really fast and put up a bunch of points despite never winning anything.

this is going to be amazng: knoblauch on getting a team to buy into being consistently good defensively: "first thing, and i'm sure every coach talks about it, if you're going to have success in this league, you have to be good defensively. that's on the penalty kill, and obvious 5v5 is a big part of that. throughout the year, i think 15 of the top 17 defensive teams on goals against made the playoffs. the year before that, it was 16 of 19. obviously, there's very strong correlation that if you are a good defensive team, you're going to have success winning games. i think any player wants to have success individually, but it feels a lot better winning as a team. i think my time as a head coach, certainly in my time in erie, is i was fortunate to have some really good offensive players.

throughout my time, i don't think i hindered their offensive production at all, but my time there, we were always first or second in goals against average. i try and empower my players to commit to playing defence without having to sacrifice any offence. that's certainly a message i'm going to try and instill in our team, and hopefully i'm going to be success and it's going to show in the wins."

holland, saying he was fine with how woodcroft held players accountable: "i think it gets to be a little more difficult when you have a 21-man roster, than a 23-man roster. for the most part, almost every game, we can only dress the players that are healthy. when you have a 23-man roster, 14, 7, and 2, you can healthy scratch some forwards, you can healthy scratch a defenceman. we haven't had that at our disposal because of the salary cap, and the decisions that i made on the team in the off-season. that's one tool the coaches use that wasn't at jay's fingertips. certainly, you see in some games, players sit out for half a period, or a period to get their attention. woody and i did talk about that, so it's not like we haven't talked about that. obviously, he didn't do it, and i was fine with it. i understood the reasons why, and we wet over.

it hasn't been one, it's been these consistent mental, i call them 'boo-boo's,' they're mental mistakes. you can play, do lots of good things, then all of a sudden you have one mental mistake, a bad-pinch, a bad turnover, and it's in the net and it's not only the one goes on the board, it's what it does to your whole team. it's like drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip. it probably was something that we had going on again last year — i guess i'm talking the defensive aspect of the puck — then we brought in ekholm, i think we finished the ninth-best team in the league in goals against.

now, we're kind of back to drip, drip, drip. i don't really know if that's on jay, or woody. obviously, we made a coaching change and i'm hoping with the coaching change there's going to be less of those mental mistakes."

How can Coffey hold anyone accountable defensively when he, himself wasn't accountable defensively in his playing days? His name was Paul Coffup, wasn't it?
