Best fans in hockey?!?

Where’s that chuckle gif. We are amongst the worst IMO. Have you been in the Saddledome?

Yeah, it’s possible that Suniev never plays an NHL game. And I don’t want people to look stupid, but what would you have traded one year of Toffoli for?

We have an exciting prospect and an RFA NHL player.

Wringing hands over the Toffoli trade of all things is a bit strange when you consider what the alternative would've been.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't for this new GM.

Why is Calgary flipping a huge bill on a team that can't ever attract big names to play for them willingly? If I was paying taxes in Calgary I would be pissed . I'd rather let the team move than pay for the arena with this teams history. Even Kadri once vetoed a trade here. This teams never going to get backnto the glory years they had in the 80s. Calgary on a lot of no trade lists.

If I were a tax payer I'd be pretty pissed buying the team a new arena when the franchise has had very limited success or excitement for the on ice product outside a few years in 43 years.

100%. Toffoli was a no brainer trade, considering age and expected next contract. You DO NOT sign Toffoli to his retirement contract after the career he's had.

Treliving had it right picking him up and Conroy had it right trading him.

The arena deal was a disaster for this city regardless of on ice success. Just pure cooperate welfare voted for by dummies that make enough money to not be struggling in this city.

Well, sure, taxpayers are on the hook for a portion of a new arena.

And looking at the numbers, the Calgary city annual operating budget is supposed to be 4.9 billion by 2026.

The Flames are responsible for 356 million, province 330 and city 537 based on a quick search. The surplus of the city of Calgary operating budget was 258 million this year

There are 1.64 million people in the city across whom the city portion is distributed

Yes the corporation benefits for sure. They pay their portion off over a long time horizon.

There are so many handles on both the revenue generation and expenditure side

I sympathize with everyone who are struggling and at the same time don’t really expect that I’ll have a good enough handle on all of these particular costs and their recuperation, and their direct impact, in light of all of the other dollars moving around, that I will be looking at my overall tax bills and specifically cursing this arena deal

If someone could tie it all together and help me understand how outraged I should be, I’d be most appreciative

Except the Flames paid more getting him than trading him while he got better

I want to thank this more than once. Brilliant, sir!

I'm not even mad, that's huge zero points. From a pure hockey perspective, it's pretty maddening that they cut the deficit to one, kill off a 5-on-3 and go on the PP entering the third period ... only to muster 2 (TWO!!!) shots in the final 20 minutes. That's unacceptable. But these results will help the higher-ups make the decisions that need to be made. Zadorov's agent asks for a trade, then Z goes out and has a horrible game. Lindholm has rejected big offers, yet doesn't give a crap out there. Sell, sell, sell.

I do feel bad for the young guys. Zary and Pospisil have been so much fun, and Wolf was really good yesterday. Can't wait to see Pelletier and Poirier too once they get healthy. Those young guys are the only positive thing about this team right now, the rest is probably my least favourite group of players I can remember as a Flames fan.

They should just use the same system for housing as well, have the province pick up 1/3 the cost to buy a house, have the city pick up 1/3 the cost to buy a house and then you as the consumer pick up 1/3. You pay off your portion over time but the extra money you have and put into the economy provides the economic boost to justify the government picking up 2/3 of the cost of purchasing a house. Just use the same logic for buying a rink and apply it to housing.

Calgary is not 1.64 million people, that's the population of the metro area. It's closer to 1.4 within city limits. That's almost a quarter million less of a tax base (size of Regina), so let's not stretch numbers here.

On what basis are you claiming Calgary have the best fans in hockey?

I’m not even sure how anyone can quantify such a statement?

I recall a time when lack of support from the best fans in hockey almost caused the team to leave.

This is what I more or less expected. I absolutely did vote: "Win the cup this year" since that's what I always pick in such polls, but I have wanted a rebuild for a couple of years now because I don't think this team has 'got it'. This is what it looks like when a team doesn't have it - they don't look like a really good functional group.

They are a mish-mash of parts. That's what it is. Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk-Bennett-Brodie-Giordano-Backlund ---- That was a good core that needed MORE pieces and a bit more time. Hartley had a tonne of warts, but he was a great development coach. Didn't like him, that's fine. The priority should have been to find an experienced coach to guide that team up the hill and make sure all the pieces are being properly developed, and continue drafting a core. The work was incomplete. It stayed incomplete.

Now you have a mish-mash of parts. Huberdeau is on his second bad season. Most of the lines don't show chemistry. The PP is terrible even though Marc Savard is in charge of it. The breakout is bad. Defending is bad. Goaltending is often spotty (but better than last season!!). The offensive game is lacking.

This is a small, soft, and complete mish-mash of pieces that don't fit, but we are going to point the finger at Huska? I don't get it. I think if you brought Scotty Bowman in his prime to coach this team, or Al Arbour, or anyone you want past or present, they would probably get more out of this roster, but it still wouldn't be a great team. It would continue being a bubble team - maybe they squeak in, maybe they just miss like last season, but this team on paper is not a good team.

This collection of players that they have just doesn't work. It doesn't mean that this collection of players all suck. It just doesn't work and will never work. I don't blame Huska one bit. I don't blame Conroy either. I blame Treliving for assembling this, and I blame the players themselves the most for being more concerned about their paydays than they are about winning hockey games.

This post is probably the most accurate description of the team/situation that I have seen. Thanks!

This is the season where if we win I'm happy and if we lose I'm also happy.

It's time a rebuild is forced upon that prick Murray Edwards. We probably have one of the worst owners in the league in terms of how much he cares about their fanbase. It's completely unacceptable to continue to wallow in the mucky middle like this with no real shot at a title.

I just hope that Conroy is given the autonomy he needs to actually rebuild the team. We actually have some decent prospects in Zary, Pelletier, Wolf and Prospisil (small sample size, but they were also dominating the AHL). If we can get a few top 5 picks this sets us up very nicely.

I’ll never actually cheer for the Flames to lose, but I can’t say I’m unhappy with these results. The team is being forced into a rebuild, which is the best long-term option for the Flames in my opinion.

The next few years are going to be very painful though. Even fewer FAs are going to want to come to Calgary and the team could be brutally bad, which won’t help attendance.
