Calgary would be better off without them during any rebuilding period.
Until a team hits the bottom of the league, the rebuild hasn’t really started, as you need great picks.
Calgary is currently in no man’s land, unless you think they’ll hit rock bottom this year. I expect they are too good for that yet.

Fox still returned the 37th and 41st picks to Carolina. Flames fans often act like Fox was just a throw-in in the trade since he wasnt going to sign, but he definitely had good value.

I believe it was reported that Treliving didn't want to include him in the trade because he thought he could get more for him in a separate deal. Based on what Carolina got for him, I suspect he would have been right.
He had value, but not as much as he should have. Carolina insisted he be included was because he was there and they knew we had to trade him. If the Flames didn't have Fox as an asset though, I doubt it would have held back the deal or that another significant asset would be needed. Obviously no way to prove something like that, just my opinion.

The taxes in Columbus make it a lot closer.

If your definition of rebuild is being the worst team in the league, that’s a pretty narrow view of it.
I don’t think this team is quite as bad as they’ve shown to date but I find the actions of the team to be pretty interesting. 10 games in and they’re set to debut their 4th rookie/1st game in the NHL player tonight. Contract talks shut down. Friedman saying he thinks Wolf is going to see some time sooner than later (paraphrasing).
I think the smoke signals out, the rebuild is on. It may take 4-5 months but I think we’re going to be seeing a change in direction for this organization. I think each of the UFA’s are dealt, maybe big Z extends, and it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if some others might go as well.

Would be better without them (Huby & Kadri), sure! That's never going to happen, neither is a buy out in a few years, or retention in a deal to get rid of them.
While trying, they may have the worst record in Flames history this season. And there is probably no reinforcement coming in, rather they will trade important players this season and get even worse (getting futures or picks or other bad players).
So they will have a high pick and Flames will probably get an important player with it this draft.
Flames are in the last place in the league discussion, after arriving from no man's land.
My only fear is that they trade whatever futures are left for 'impact players' that can get them back in the race. I fear because I don't think we have the assets to get meaningful immediate help, we'll get more Yegors (or best player not in the NHL types) in exchange for picks and lose the glimmer of hope that comes from our current draft picks over the next few years.

The Blues were awful last year with the highly coveted O'Reilly, Tarasenko and Barbashev.

That’s still diminished value. If he was going to sign would you have traded him for 2 2nds? Didn’t think so.

I was referring to you comment that Hubby and Kadri are good guys to have around during a rebuild. If the Flames would be better off without them, why are they good to have around?

To be a crappy team you need to spend to the cap floor and generally have players that can’t play up to their AAV.
Huberdeau and Kadri seem like perfect players to have around during a rebuild.

It's lemonade out of lemons. I'd love it if they were both gone. That won't happen. So let's look on the bright side.
- Cap floor
- Both guys are good pros by all accounts - take care of themselves, work hard in training
- Do post game interviews, take heat for losses/bad games
- Veteran experience including a cup win
- They are probably good for 60-40 points/year each through their contracts
- Older leaders with families are less likley to be clubbers, trouble seekers - kids learn good habits
- They probably won't beat up cab drivers
I mean WTF, I didn't make this mess, how the hell am I supposed to know how to clean it up.

I don't see any benefit being forced to tie that much money for that many years. You can always give bloated one year deals to veterans to hit the floor, like Chicago did this year. Giving out money is never a problem.

Sure they won’t play up to their AAV, but they are still players that will plat better than the Joey Anderson’s of the world, and will take up space that the Flames could potentially use to weaponize cap space.

Agreed. But there is no hurry in moving those guys out either.

You surround those two with bad players and you will quite easily have the worst team in the league and oodles of cap space you want to weaponize.
There is little to no benefit in losing every game you play.
Question is whether you're competitive by the time Kadri's contract is up. Deal with it then.
Running around trying to unload those contracts now seems like a waste of time and assets to me.

Friedman on HNIC said that with Pesce returning from injury Canes are looking to move a D man. DeAngelo's name is out there but Canes are willing to consider other names.

You already have them, and it will cost a lot to get rid of them because you’d have to sweeten so much. That’s the benefit.
