I’m talking about beyond that season. Should’ve clarified. Once he was traded Monahan continued to play injured and that required us to pivot. Unfortunately, that pivot was paying a 1st and Monahan for Kadri. Yikes.

I'm not even sure whether a bottom 10 finish is in the Flames best interest going forward because didn't we give up that 1st rounder to Montreal in the Monahan trade? It's got a million conditions but I thought it was either this season or next based on a bunch of criteria.
It feels like a Flames bullseye to #### the bed either this season or next and then give that pick away.. man, Treliving really did a number on us. We will be recovering from that summer for the next 10 years it feels like.

It's irritating as hell that we didn't load up for the strongest draft in a decade.
Looking at this one, even if we sell it's kind of a dogs breakfast. Top 2 look real good, but the rest is kinda meh in my opinion. Eiserman seems like the prize, celebrini good.

The pick is top 10 protected and it could be the Flames or the Panthers pick
both picks could be good based on starts though

We would all be very happy if Montreal takes the Flames pick this year. Where the Flames really run into trouble is if the Panthers suck this year and the Flames no longer get their 2025 pick. If that happens then the only protection they have is if the pick is 1st overall. Need the Panthers to make the playoffs this year as a start and then not have a top ten pick the following.

Huberdeau falling off reminds me when Dallas traded Loui Eriksson to Boston.

Conroy is in an even tougher situation than I thought. If he actually sells all the UFAs then he has to bet on Florida being a playoff team over the next two years and they just squeaked in last year despite going deep. If he goes for a harder re-tool then Montreal could end up with a very good pick if Florida sucks

I don’t even think there is a comparable for how far Huberdeau has fallen off

Single biggest drop season to season in NHL history.
Huberdeau’s collapse is historic, and that cannot be ignored.

I would be interested in seeing a list of comparables but I have no idea where to dig that up.
Gary Leeman comes across as a comparison. He went from 51 goals and 95 points in 80 games, to 17 goals and 29 points in 52 games the following season. He never played a full season again after in 95 point season, and never approached a PPG pace again either.
In the case of Leeman though, he only had 2 seasons where he better than a PPG, plus some significant off ice issues, so the drop off wasn't that unpredictable.

Upcoming teams to Nov 14th:
Rangers
Blues
No Goods
Stars
Kraken
Predators
Maple Leafs
Senators
Canadiens
Some pretty tough matchups and no gimmies - especially the way this team is playing.
Those games are followed by:
Canucks
Islanders
Kraken
Predators
Stars
Avalanche
Golden Knights
Stars
This team could very well be toast by the end of November. The way they've been playing to start the season, it would be quite the feat just for the Flames to be .500 over this stretch of games.

He dipped a bit but his last year in Boston, he scored 30G 30A. The most comical part is actually the Canucks signing him as UFA after that for $6M x 6 and he immediately tanked and averaged about 20 something points per year for 4 years scoring no more than 11 goals per season. His first goal as a Canuck was scoring in is own empty net in a game vs the Flames.

I find this article to be helpful to understand the trade conditions with Montreal including the conditions with Philly that could come into play

No one was trading 2023 picks without a huge overpay.

Are you #%^*ing kidding me Brad? We very well may have given a 2nd-10th overall pick to dump 1 year of Monahan and get the wonderful ability to sign Kadri?
Brad was a terrible General Manager. Absolutely horrific. The risk attached to that trade destroys anything good Brad has previously done in my eyes.

That’s also if Floridas first this year is in the top ten so they keep it. We are actively cheering for Florida this year so we get their first next year.
The most likely is Montreal gets the higher of ours and Floridas picks, except if the Flames is in the top 10, then they get Floridas. I have a tough time thinking that Florida will be a bottom 10 team this year.

… that’s how lottery protected picks typically work.
I don’t disagree with the rest.
