Term and cap hit are always considerations, but that aside, I think it's always a win if you can keep a good player in his prime. At the very least, it helps the image of the franchise when a player chooses to stay. Hanifin would have a lot of options on the open market.

This. It's so hard to land a true #1, norris calibre blueliner. I guess we had one in Fox, but let's ignore for now. They cost $10mm plus.
Next best thing is have a great top 4 where the 4th isn't much different than the 1st. Distributes risk if one gets hurt. Match-ups are easier. Leaves 10-15 mins a night of icetime for the bottom pairing if you were forced to compromise when money is tight.

Only thing on contract I’ve herd is 6.75x8 but that was 10 or so days ago. I think it might cost you more because of age.
