And that's on the D

You can have good parts and still miss the playoffs... obviously

16 teams have been worse than Calgary during that stretch and I bet all of them have players we would happily take

That being said I wouldn't sign anyone for a while

Andersson and Hanifin were the top pairing on a team that finished 3rd in GA two seasons ago, and Weegar received Norris consideration in his last two seasons before joining the Flames.

These three guys are good enough to carry the load, and they're all currently in or entering their prime.

Lets not allow bad coaching and poor player utilization to cloud our judgement of three objectively good players.

The Flames signing Hanifin to a long-term deal at $6.5M AAV or less is a fair (and tradeable) contract.

Yah, F those guys for trying to sign a 26 year old Top 4 NHL defenseman. We don't need those types of guys.

Conroy: "Ah jeeze, the trade offers weren't very good this Summer"

Nonis: "Ah, that's just a product of the salary cap system...it is what it is."

Conroy: "Well, if the trade market is bad, we better get the papers out and get a contract signed. We can't risk losing such a good player for nothing. You have experience signing contracts right?"

Nonis: "Well, I did pay absolute premiums for Dion Phaneuf, Phil Kessel, Leo Komarov, and David Clarkson! It just so happened that those contracts set the Maple Leafs back a half decade, but you know...it is what it is"

Conroy: "Get to it!"

Nobody: "Maybe we're overvaluing our own players, and that's why no one is offering what we deem as 'acceptable' offers"

I mean it's fine. We'll take hanifin back for his prime at a cap hit similar to Weegar's

But calling it a huge win for the organization is a bit much.

A winning organization isn't celebrating retaining a serviceable top 4 for probably too much money.

No one's breaking down the door to get him because he's frankly been unspectacular in every way, and this at a time when he's supposedly fighting for a next contract.

He probably realized he's getting his best number by just re-upping with the Flames and that's all that's happening here.

I know that some are underwhelmed by Hanafin, but signing him would lock up a top 4 defenseman for his prime years. You only have to look north to see that there's not an abundance of top 4 defenseman in this league and I think the Flames are better with Hanfin than trying to fill that hole for years with a post-apex veteran or rookie defenseman. As of now the offensive players and goaltenders aren't good enough and the last thing this team needs is to get considerably worse on defense as well.

Did the Flames overvalue Toffoli? Getting a $3M 4th liner and 3rd round pick for a guy who scored .8ppg since he left the Kings seems like the Flames took what they could get.

If the offers for Hanifin are trash then he is the one guy it really makes sense to keep. This team has a thin pipeline on the back end and only 2 guys signed beyond this year. If they get the 26 year old top pairing guy inked that is not terrible.

Considering the new coaching staff has already decided the Huberdeau-Lindholm pairing is not working after 5-6 games like the last staff I see no way they can extend Lindholm. They cannot keep these guys unless there is a clear path to being able to dump Huberdeau/Kadri.

I see trade value and market value as correlated.

I'll be more than fine with locking up a decent top 3 on defense long term if we can sell off Lindholm for a king's random at the deadline instead of re-signing him for 8x9 which I would dread.

Just don't sign both. They need to retool by using the rest of their UFAs as trade chips. These three d-men will still be good for a while so at least they have time on their side in that regard

Not right now it isn't. Flames UFAs are all expiring at the worst time. His trade value would be a lot more with next year's cap

At this point, move Lindholm, keep one of the D men of the upcoming FA's.

I love Zadorov but it's a pickle to keep him in the fold.

His highest trade value is with a team that wants to re-sign him, so next years cap is very much a factor.

This years cap hit is next to nothing and a contract coming our way could easily balance out the trade.

I just can’t accept the idea that Hanifin is seen around the league as an exceedingly valuable player but teams won’t trade for him because they can’t figure out the cap situation. I have no idea what trade offers they have received, so it’s all speculation. I just hope the signing represents good value. Locking up a good hound defenseman makes sense for the Flames as it is does for every other team in the league.

I like how he has a 50% chance and still manages to be wrong every time.

Let's hope it starts with a 6, and is less than Weegar.

EDIT: I now understand sureloss' nickname. Every Flames signing seems like a sure loss these days.
