You know what I’ll never waste my money on? Kids. I never have to worry about sending them away for school or saving for tuition either.
By not having kids at all, I spent all the extra money they would have needed for university on lavish vacations, fancy meals and luxury items for my home.

For you younger parents out there, it does get easier, but not cheaper.

I mean you're right, you can't change a thing unless you commit murder. People get married, buy cars and start new jobs all the time. And how often do people regret it and need to get divorced, bail on the purchase or quit? For at least 2 decades or more; hell a homicide sentence in Canada doesn't even last that long.
I went to a concert last night and the Uber drivers are just irritating. They’re lined up outside the dome and none of them would accept a trip. I talked to a driver and he said they weren’t accepting because they wanted it to be surge pricing, so they would holdout until that happened. So ridiculous.
That's hilarious. They've realized if they come together and refuse trips for a little bit, surge pricing kicks in and they can actually hold out for a living wage for a few hours. Good for them. The algorithms work against the employees all the time, they've just found a way to pwn the algorithm.
Your beef is with Uber, not the drivers.

I did not peg you as a Wu Tang Clan fan.
My son and his fiends went, apparently the concert was “really hype”. Unless that was some autocorrect error.
On topic of gear grinders, my geriatric cat has taken to yowling at 3am until she gets human attention and someone opens their door and lets her sleep on their bed, which I guess is fine, I don’t prevent it and she makes a good foot warmer, until she gets all attacky.

Oh this is hilarious!

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Haha, well I love rap and hip hop. Always have and that was a great show!

It didn’t work anyway. I walked to the other end of the grounds and got a ride home, but I checked and the trip costs didn’t rise. In fact, they dropped because people just made other arrangements. Maybe if it was -30 they might have had a chance, but in this case it just seemed like they left money on the table because they refused the trips. So sure…good for them?
I’d also say, during university, you have 4 months off each summer. Find a job outside the city or wherever and it’s basically a gap year without the financial drain.
Late to the party but just wanted to quote this for truth. You get loads of time off in university, the equivalent of a year over a four year period. Plus all the opportunities to study abroad if you attend a major college.
I am also on team go away for college so long as it is not a financial sacrifice.
To be clear, I'll work in retirement but it will be at something I like (#### I hope it is)
I think that this is increasingly common and retirement is harder than people think. First, you have to find something to do for an awful lot of your time. I know people have hobbies, and things they like doing, but most of us don't do those things for 40 hours a week. (Posting on CP doesn't count!)
Second, you've been saving money and watching that account grow, and psychologically starting to spend that is really difficult. You can tolerate some dips and such when you're in the accumulation phase, but decumulation is a whole other story.
And last (to keep this short), people need a reason to get up everyday. Think really hard about what you're retiring to, and not just what you're retiring from. You need a purpose. You're not just going to watch TV and "chill" for your retirement, I hope, because that's a death sentence.
We need a more flexible employment model that offers a gradual off-ramp from full-time work to retirement. For most of history, people would reach their peak labour output in their 40s, and then tail off to less demanding work roles as their energy and capacity declined.
Unless you’re self-employed, that’s really hard to do in our modern labour market. If you’re a white-collar professional, there’s no option to ease off to less challenging roles at 4 and then 3 and then 2 days a week. It’s full bore 40 hours a week with the same responsibilities as your 35 year old self, or quit and get a completely different job.
I don’t have the same energy or capacity of keep up with unrelenting new tools and processes that I did 15 years ago. But I’m not ready (and can’t afford) to become a Walmart greeter yet. There has to be something in between.

The idea of working 34 more years before retiring is agonizing.
The idea of being forced to retire before I am ready is also un-nerving. I'm at that age (56) that I'm not quite there yet (retirement funds) and if I lose my job it's not going to be easy to find another due to my age and niche role I am in. I know so many people who were involuntarily downsized between the ages of 55-60.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Remember all the things and dollar amounts you were told that you'd need in order to retire?
Well when you were told those things it was in a pre-COVID, pre-rampant inflationary and pre-high-interest environment.
So that doesnt hold anymore.
People's CPP and OAS? Same deal.
Cost of housing and food? Oh you'd better believe it.
The factors and circumstances have dramatically changed over the past ~3 years or so.
You’re looking for the “I don’t want to live on this planet” thread. This is supposed to be a bit lighter, like traffic and annoying people. Not facts that shatter the illusion of freedom.
