True, but you get the idea. Parents have a lot of influence on their kids. Some more than others.
I s### you not...I know of a family who forced both of their daughters to 'force' their husbands into selling their individual houses, giving the girls' parents the proceeds so they could buy a Compound where all of the families could live together.
And they did it.
Crazy things happen.

It makes perfect sense. Life is unpredictable. They're going to have a house I'll put the down payment on and they'll be responsible for renting out the rooms. Keeping a safe place for them at home is considerate. Maybe they'll need mom and dad and their comfortable little rooms after a break up, if they get sick, if they're stressed out...who knows? If it's not needed I won't keep it forever like some weird mausoleum, but until I'm sure they're gone, settled and not coming back I'm going to have a spot here for them.
I think buying the house also scratches the independence itch - it's for sure healthy to get some space from your parents as a young adult.
For a gap year, I'd love to see them move to a ski hill. I moved to lake Louise to work for a winter the day after I turned 18...it was so fkn awesome and fun. They're both snowboard instructors and they have expressed an interest, so we'll see. I know they're feeling pressure to go straight to university as that seems to be the plan for a lot of their friends, so I'm just leaving that up to them.
As for a gap year after university...I'm 100% fine with that and I don't think it's a detriment to career prospects. Will some employers not like that? Well, I guess so, evidenced by people saying that in this thread; however, I wouldn't let that dissuade them at all. For every employer that would look down on that, I'm sure there are a dozen who would find it interesting and view it as an asset that somebody would take the opportunity to go on an adventure or do something interesting before starting adulthood. I know I would and I've hired a hundred people over my career.
I just think going away for university is a waste of money. Money isn't everything, true, but I grew up many years poor af and having money is a bazillion times better than being stressed about money. Could I afford to send them away? Sure. Will I? Not a chance...I'll take the money that would cost and set them up with a huge headstart in life that'll pay dividends their entire life with less debt, less interest paid and more financial security. Just like a big wedding...I'll never contribute a cent to one of those lavish money wasters. I'll pay for a justice of the peace and a nice dinner. Boom, done. Shouldn't cost more than $2k. I can't stand to see money wasted.

You know what I’ll never waste my money on? Kids. I never have to worry about sending them away for school or saving for tuition either.
By not having kids at all, I spent all the extra money they would have needed for university on lavish vacations, fancy meals and luxury items for my home.

It's basically impossible to get into a walk-in medical clinic, apparently. My doctor left the country and I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement yet. So I figure there must be a walk in clinic somewhere in the city that can see me, right? Not a chance, most are full by 6 and others don't even pick up the phone. I guess I have to go to the ER? Kind of at a loss...

No, and if I had a nickel for every time my doctor left the country permanently I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice and I'm starting to wonder if it's something I'm doing wrong.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure being able to breathe is important so hopefully I can figure something out here.

I dont know you personally, but I'll tell you what happens a lot in my line of work.
"Hey...can you take on my Business? My Accountant Retired."
- Oh they did, did they? Whats their name? *Google shows they are up and running.*
My favourite one happened just this year.
"My Accountant went home to India, she took all of my documents with her and then when she got to India she burned them all!"
Yes. Thats insane.
Nothing to do with you or your situation mind you.

Engineering education in Canada is so heavily regulated by the CEAB (by extension, all the provincial professional associations) that frankly it doesn't matter all that much where you go, if you're going to do one of the traditional disciplines. If you're wanting to do a particular specialty it may be worth going to a particular school, if only for the industry connections; e.g. 10+ years ago if you wanted to specialize in petroleum engineering? Go to UofC, no question. Manufacturing? Go somewhere in Ontario—Windsor, Western, Ottawa, McMaster. Or McGill. Etc.

Anecdotally the iffiest interns I've had have been from UofC and UNB, but it had little to do with their education, I think; more so they were ultimately just not interested in what we do. Which, eh... I get, it's not for everyone, and they're still figuring out what they want to do.
Anecdotally, the only students (and new grads) I've ever worked with who had piss-poor attitudes and were haughty and condescending about where they went to school were from UofT and Waterloo. The only engineers I've worked with who mistreated technologists and drafters with arrogance, derision and scorn were UofT and Waterloo grads. As such those universities' grads are ones I treat with suspicion, biased and unfair as that may be.
With respect to the overarching discussion about kids moving away for post-secondary or going local, I don't know what the "better" option is for creating a more well-rounded adult. I never had the option, myself. My parents couldn't financially support me, and I didn't qualify for enough in student loans to pay for living somewhere hundreds/thousands of kilometres away on top of tuition/books/supplies. The only way I made it work such as it was was scholarships/bursaries/grants, working over the summers and squirrelling away as much as possible, and my parents graciously allowing me to live 'at home' rent-free so long as I stayed in school, did >1/2 the housework and paid for 1/2 the household groceries. Generally I was flat broke all the time.

Yes, yes....now do as I say.
When you're a kid its a bit of a fun rivalry, but you're right...that Engineering degree is tough.
Probably the hardest degree at U of C. It is a massive workload.

Hahaha. Have heard that story of the lost accountant/records so often. One time was actually legit and it took us several years to clean up the mess left, file past returns and recreate the information because the records were gone.

Cool stroy bro...
My doctor actually did leave the country. It was years ago now.
The doc i had as a child, awesome guy. I quit going for regular checkups after i became an adult and really only needed an ER for stitches and tetanus shots. But when i did need a doc at about 26 or so, i looked him up and his office had closed. Literally 2 days later, i see him on the news. He had closed his practice and set up clinics in central Africa dealing with children, malaria, HIV etc. I donated money to his endeavor.

You had me worried, I Googled... and all I can say is if it's a fake out they've gone a long way to make it seem legit because they truly do both seem to be gone.
Anyway, I went out to the far reaches of the suburbs and found somewhere that could get me an inhaler. Certain death averted. I'm sure you were all worried.

I almost never feel hungry first thing in the morning. Except for today….and I have a medical test later this morning so I can’t eat. As a result this morning I have a raging beast in my stomach that needs to be fed and can’t be.

The walk-in clinic in Mission is usually pretty easy to go to. Also, if you go first thing in the morning there is almost no one there.

Losing a family doctor sucks. Especially once you hit middle age.
I didn’t care if I had a family doctor in my 20s and 30s - I’d just go to a walk-in clinic if I had an issue (so maybe once every 2-3 years). But when you get older, even if you’re in overall good health you tend to develop nagging, chronic issues where it helps to have a doctor who knows your history. My family doctor not only knows my history, he’s been the doctor for my special needs brother (who I’m the caregiver for) for 20 years and is great with him. And he still checks in on my dad, who’s in a care home now.
But he’s retiring in four months and nobody has bought his practice yet.

This is the thing about Family Doctors and Dentists, its not really an industry with significant differentiation so their main goal is throughput.
But there are only so many people you can run through in a day and retain a modicum of sanity.
