Its not like Israel has a track history of being cuddly teddy-bears who use half-measures. Hamas had to know they would come out intent on cracking some skulls.
Something else has to be going on.
looking at this from over here, i really don't understand Hamas' play here. What was the purpose of all this in their mind?
Attack Israel in an embarrassing fashion and then call for a cease fire? Like is that it?
"We screwed up big time, and didn't expect that Israel would react with the goal of utter destruction of Hamas and its supporters. Now we want to play nice."
Funny how that works.
Given that they simultaneously threatened to execute hostages on live TV, that reading of the situation that they're "playing nice" seems implausible. To me, it sounds like normal nonsense to try to fool people who aren't paying much attention into thinking their opponent is the aggressor; Russia does the same thing all the time.

I mean, the conspiracy angle is that there's some orchestration by Likud in this; they've been wanting the social license to wipe Palestinians off the map for most of the 24ish years they've been in power.
How they would convince them this attack would accomplish anything positive for Palestine is a mystery however.

Thats what I mean, something else has to be going on otherwise none of this makes any sense.
I dont know what it is and I dont pretend that I can explain it, but if theres nothing else then this was just inviting yourself to an ass-kicking contest as the Guest of Honour.
It doesnt make sense.

I don't think Hamas actually had much of a plan beyond this. They have been threatening an act like this, since day one. They are like a dog chasing it's own tail that finally bites it.

I mean, you're right, thats pretty 'Conspiracy-ey?'
I dont know. I just...I dont find it entirely reasonable to just take circumstances at face value because, to me, that seems insane.

Palestinians today in many ways face unprecedented repression. As of September 1, Israel held 1,264 Palestinians in administrative detention without trial or charge, the highest number in more than 30 years, according to the Israeli human rights organization HaMoked. Israeli forces have, as of September 19, killed more Palestinians in the West Bank in 2023 than in any other year since 2005, when the UN began systematically recording fatalities, according to UN OCHA: 182, including 39 children. Israel has outlawed prominent Palestinian human rights organizations and maintained a closure of Gaza for more than 16 years, with devastating effect on the more than 2.1 million Palestinians who live in this 40-by-11 kilometer (25-by-7 mile) strip of land.
These abuses take place in a context in which Israeli authorities are committing the crime against humanity of apartheid against Palestinians.

I don't think that Palestine will be "wiped off the map" here. As pissed off as the Israelis are, I don't see them just killing millions of people. I don't see Egypt opening up their borders to accept the Palestinians either.
Likud was also on the verge of announcing a major peace deal with Saudi Arabia, that would have shifted the balance of power vastly in their favor. That's not happening while Israel is actively fighting Palestinians.

Hamas are a bunch of religious fanatics who think that dying in the pursuit of their goals guarantees that they go to heaven. Hamas are the useful idiots.
The people who funded this, and likely planned most of it, don't actually live in Gaza. So they don't really care what happens to Gaza. The worse the retaliation, the easier it is to recruit future religious fanatic useful idiots.

I didn't think someone would be able to find someone more insufferable than Ben Shapiro, but somehow, here you are.

Anyone know any good documentaries on this conflicts that go through the history leading up to this point? Not so much this past week, but what got them here?

Maybe, maybe not. But it's definitely the closest they've been to effective social license to go Full Genocide with the West's blessing.
Let me guess you didn’t watch. If you did you would know he is 100% correct and far more knowledgeable than anyone on this site on this conflict.
Like I said before, he is the furtherest thing from an authority on any subject matter. He is a garbage human being and shouldn't be listened to. If I want an accurate rundown of the history and conflicts within the regions there are much better sources available.

You are either unhinged or completely losing touch with reality.
But really good rebuttal.
This was really worth the 8 hour wait. It’s good that, despite the conversation moving on, you hadn’t, so you made sure we all had to read this idiotic response.
Call me cherry blossom and tell me I’m mentally challenged next, you absolute winner. Or move along like an adult.

It's now a Whataboutism to bring up the far history of *does math* three weeks ago between Israel and Palestine when discussing Israel and Palestine.
Should we give a run down to all of the demonic things Palestinians do to Palestinians? Torture, permitted rape, women treated as second class, no more like 3rd class citizens, child soldiers, relief fund for bombs and not schools, mass persecutions of gays. Should we go on? Was the events of two days ago not enough for you to realize tha animals Israel lives next to?
