Haven't been paying much attention all summer, did the Flames sell and a new owner is now in charge? No? What a shame. Same ownership, same disappointment, same dismal result yet again...

I can’t remember a time I was less excited about the Flames. I wouldn’t be shocked if they snuck into the playoffs, but I’m not expecting much. Maybe Coronato will be fun to watch. This isn’t like when they had Gaudreau and Tkachuk coming up though and we knew they had something special.

I find the selective memories of some posters interesting. There were a lot of posters wanting to blow up the Gaudreau Flames multiple times. After the bubble season and then the Canadian division disaster, there was less optimism than now.

I am surprised at how optimistic folks are for the upcoming season.

Yup. Gaudreau was a "complimentary player" and not a guy who could drive a team.

Blowing up the Gaudreau Flames would have been the right thing to so. Many posters felt he would bolt to the US and thats exactly what he did. And does anyone see Gaudreau as the guy leading you to a Cup? Pretty unlikely. And they won one series by an OT goal in game 7. Not exactly convincing. Then they got stomped by the Oilers. Glad we kept that team together and really proved nothing to the naysayers.

If Markstrom has an exorcism between now and the start of the season? Will battle for a playoff spot.
If we get what he gave us last year and what I’ve seen in the preseason? Bottom 10.

Can we just cap Markstrom at 30 starts to limit the damage? Obviously he has to play at his price tag, but it's the least we could do to help our chances this season.
We're starting to get pretty far removed from that Vezina nomination, so we really can't keep milking that factoid as a reason to keep awarding him consistent starts.

But, here is what I don't get: if Markstrom plays the same as he did last year, why would that on its own produce a significantly worse result?
I have said this before, and it bears repeating: if Markstrom shows no improvement over last year, then this team will be exactly where it was last year—on the playoff bubble, battling for a spot. But, if he is even just a little better, then this is unquestionably a playoff team.

Just adding to your point that the assets if they were futures from that trade/blow up would be contributing this season.
Instead...he walked for nothing.

Just how many years ago are you suggesting the team should have been blown up?

Five possibilities:
1. Markstrom plays better. With better goaltending, this is a playoff team.
2. Markstrom doesn't play better, but Vladar does and takes over the starter's job. With better goaltending, this is a playoff team.
3. Markstrom and Vladar both fail to play better, so they give the net to Wolf. With better goaltending, this is a playoff team.
4. None of the goalies particularly play better, but the team in front of them stops giving up so many ten-bell chances by pressing too hard in the offensive zone, trying for a high volume of low-quality shots. With better team defence in front of the same goaltending, this is a playoff team.
5. None of the above work out and the team is the same or worse.
Seems to me like a fair number of things have to go wrong before we get to #5.

Okay, but to play devil's advocate
1. Vladar plays better, but doesn't get enough starts
2. Wolf is better, but doesn't get enough starts
3. The Flames aren't the healthiest team in the league this year (already seems to be the case)
4. The Flames have troubles scoring without last year's leading scorer
I guess my point is, the Flames don't always act rationally, objectively, or correctly.
I could also see the Kings and Kraken regressing a fair amount. There's a chance the Flames make the playoffs even if they perform the same as last year.

Cup winners and I have absolutely no reason whatsoever to think otherwise. Might not even start watching until late May.

So your point is that improved goaltending doesn't matter because the coaches are too stupid to use it?
