I am telling you guys, this is a special group:
· The Calgary Flames General Manager was a former team captain, and he was recruited and groomed for the position by the Flames over the course of a decade.
· The Head Coach was recruited by the now-General Manager, and has spent his entire professional coaching career in the organization.
· The Flames Captain was drafted by the team, has spent his entire professional career here, and today he was signed to a contract extension and named the captain by the former team captain and now-General Manager.
Today is a good day to be a Flames fan.

I do think he has the personality and track record to bring a solid hockey culture to the management. But again that rests on the Owners edict for what happens with this team. Does Conroy have the ability to push back against the Owners and do what it takes to build a contender? We will see! Then they went with Huska instead of Mitch Love. I owe it to Huska to give him a chance, but this feels like another safe pick to me. Mitch Love really got the best out of his players with the Wranglers. And he really seemed to know how to position them accordingly to capitalize on their skill sets.
When I heard Weegars name being thrown around for the Captaincy I sort of thought it might breath some new life into this team. Go with an outsider with a fresh perspective. I would have been okay with Huberdeau too for the same reasons, and from everything I've heard he's been great at making the young players feel like they belong. Backlund is a good choice, but he's also the safe choice. And playing it safe has been the Flames calling card for years. Hopefully Backlund signing is the first domino to fall, with Lindholm and ideally Hanafin signing next. There's a lot riding on the success of this squad this year, and I'm not entirely convinced that playing it safe was the right move! Though I'd love to be proven wrong.

Don’t think the Flames are going to be able to afford both of Lindholm and Hanifin’s raises. I bet they will focus on Lindholm.

Good contract for the Flames.
2 years at $4.5 is a no brainer for Backlund.

As for Backlund, not a huge fan of the deal or him being captain. However, I can see why it makes sense for now with the team not rebuilding.

The sin bin is a start but I would just ban this loser before his garbage causes actual board contributors like sec214 to quit with their contributions (that are MUCH appreciated BTW)

Too often we think that we need an outside perspective to help move forward. It is usually the guy that has seen the problems that likely has a better chance and solving the problems in my opinion . Like the contract and the C for Backlund. Let's see if we can surround him with talent to get this group to a playoff series win. Not going to lie, feels like this is a cohesive group and that in itself is worth its weight in gold

I'm surprised that the Flames have had 21 captains. That seems like a lot considering they've only had like 3 in the past 20 years.

From 1980-1990 the Flames ran with two captains for most of those years. They had a total of five over the decade, plus another four in Atlanta.

Three captains seemed to yield a halfway decent result.

Do you really honestly think nik cares that a couple of the fake insiders are getting more atenntion then him? Come on.
Calling out obvious role players is not an unclassy thing to do.

It's been a month of people trying to discredit and attack these people. Yourself included.
Tired of it.
Calling it out is the right thing to do.

I'm not sure if I posted these thoughts, but I'll completely admit that my perspective on Backlund was a the Flames must trade and move on perspective at some point prior to the deadline this year.
That perspective wasn't formed from any dislike or undervalue of the player. All the amazing things said about him so far in this thread, I fully agree with, and I actually believe he's one of the few Flames who elevates his performance in meaningful and playoff games. So I figured we'd be a worse team with out him. My opinion to move on from him was driven from the simple belief that he would be getting 4+ years on his next deal, and north of $5M per (clearly my skills at reading the player market, are not strong).
I simply didn't think the Flames could afford to go term and that dollar value on a player that isn't a slam dunk first line player. But at this term and $ value, I couldn't be happier to have him back! Also, no brainer captain choice given he's signed.

I have to say, I love the hubris of some posters saying things like “I wouldn’t have picked him to be captain”. Oh yeah? And on what basis do you think your opinion has any value at all? You aren’t on the team. You aren’t part of the organization. You don’t even personally know a player on the team. Yet somehow, you’ve deluded yourself into thinking you know better. Incredible.

Yeah, something changed in recent years to the point where it doesn’t even matter if the ‘inside’ info is legitimate anymore - it’s defended because it’s fun.
Which is fine, I guess. We’re all just bull####ting here. But pointing out when ‘insider’ posts seem like attention-seeking bull#### should be fine too. No need to grab pitchforks and defend the bull####ters.

A few CP posters calling out the attention-seekers didn’t stop an actual insider from providing actual inside info about Backlund’s contract.
And given the number of personal attacks that are tolerated on this board every day, characterizing a handful of posts criticizing the attention-seekers as a ‘witch-hunt’ is pretty questionable.
