People are hesitant to post on these boards because some make it their goal to be the main character of all the threads.
It's surprising that poster is continued to be allowed to post here, honestly.

Their only intent is to fight and its pretty disheartening to have to wade through.

To get Backlund on a two year deal, with a 4 handle, is just fantastic. Expected a 2yr deal to come in at around $5.5M, and wouldn't have been overly surprised if it were closer to $6M. The whole discussion of a longer deal was to get the AAV under $4M. But $4.5M, for 2 years, is a home run.

Also, I think there is value in guys playing their whole career in one city, and Backlund is a fantastic ambassador for this town. Keeping him here, getting a great contract, and making him the captain...

Don't think this is the right direction for the team, but he is very deserving of the reasonable contract and captaincy

signing a good player to a good contract isn't 'the right direction for the team"?

Agreed.

I did think it was interesting that Backlund mentioned talking to Gio about things and his feelings about his time post Calgary in the spring.

Who knows if it played a role but I did wonder if maybe seeing the Flames leave Gio exposed in the expansion draft played a role in Gaudreau and some of these other guys decisions when talking about re-signing.

I honestly would have preferred Backlund as the captain over Gio.. and I'm not even a huge fan of Backlund.

Like I said in the other thread this would be a deal I would be behind 100% a short term higher AAV.

Long term and even slightly lower really hinders the team going forward.

But none of that matters now as today is a day to mourn and celebrate.

I just feel like Conroy played everything perfectly so far. All these guys looked so distraught and shocked after the season and sounded like they wanted no part of the Flames.

Instead he changed the culture over the summer and didn't force it on anyone until they got back to the city. Let the new atmosphere and culture remind them why they stayed here in the first place. Also have to believe Conroy shared his own experience of leaving a place he loved and it not being the same.

I am the first to admit I was a massive supporter of Darryl when he was brought back and even last season, but dude, how toxic was this guy? Minute he's gone, Backlund's tune changes 180 degrees. Sutter alone was able to almost convince a player who's only known the Flames and the city of Calgary to leave.

The boys on the barn burner were mentioning that if we bring Lindholm back as well, we'll have all our top 3 centers over 30 for the next 3 years. Is that really an area of concern? Does anyone see Backlund finishing this contract on the 4th line?

I just wanted to see what you guys think as a discussion.

As for my opinion, I actually do want to see some prospects given the chance to be a center at the NHL level. I think that Dube, Ruzicka, and Zary have potential to develop into a top 6 center. Right now I don't know how that would work, but I'm not too worried about it either because I think Lindholm can always play #1RW as well.

The Flames have no Cs pushing for top 9 at the moment. Yes, Zary is there, but he is nowhere near bumping any of those guys.

The way I look at it is that Lindholm, Kadri, Backlund is a pretty strong set of Cs for the next 3 years. After that? We can deal with it then.

Glad to see it, Backlund should finish his career here.

Kudos to Conny for a good contract.

I assumed they were in camp together that year. Which would have been fall of 2008.
